The Battle of 40 Times

To answer the age old question to which conference is really faster, the Big Ten or the SEC, Badger Nation crunches the numbers between Wisconsin and Tennessee for the 22nd Outback Bowl

Data and methodology (by BigAppleBucky):

1. Almost all speed data is from Couchscout.com. My hope is that either it is accurate, or more likely, that the errors in the data off-set each other.

2. One UT player's time was from the Scout database. Strickland's time of 4.55 was a pure guesstimate on my part.

3. I used available depth charts and information on the UT suspensions.

4. There seem to be quirks in the numbers. For example, Couchscout has Hubbard and Pressley both listed at 4.62. I strongly suspect Ike would win a foot race with Chris.

Conclusions:

Last year, I compared Arkansas and the Badgers the same way and concluded the teams were close, with the Hogs having a slight edge.

Two years ago, it was clear to me UW had a nice speed advantage, but were physically smaller than Auburn, exactly the opposite of the usual Big Ten - SEC comparison.

This year Tennessee has both an overall edge and a decided speed edge in wide receiver and defensive backs. The passing game looks scary to me on both sides of the ball with the Badgers having an advantage at tight end.

The running game, on the other hand, offers hope. We're about as fast and our running backs are bigger and nearly as fast.

The offensive and defensive lines for UT are about as massive as our own. No advantage to either team there. But the UT guys are slightly faster.

Donovan is also (much) faster than Ainge. Big deal. Ainge might get sacked once the entire game. Donovan will get sacked several times, but we can hope his legs make up for that.

One more thing. The suspensions of the UT players didn't change this comparison much at all. But, of course, the 3 subs won't be as good as the three starters.

Here is the data compiled if you want to take a closer look.
