I love the upside of Brendan Kelly and I know Randall McCray has to be chomping at the bit to get to get him down to Madison. Brendan Kelly is the ultimate clay that McCray will get to mold and polish.
If Brendan Kelly wants it, he could be an Adam Carriker type defensive end at the college level. Kelly has outstanding length! Once he learns how to use that length and his hands, he's going to be a world beater.
Kelly can read and react well, he's a guy who bends well off the edge and shows a great burst to the football. Brendan's motor is always running and he thrives on making the big play. Strong, physical and plays hard! This is the good news.
Ok, things Brendan Kelly will need to work on at the next level. Welcome to the Big Ten. You will know longer face 6-2 tackles. Technique, technique and more technique and let's not forget a whole lot of weight-room and training table.
Kelly will get a quick introduction to Big Ten football by Gabe Carimi, Josh Oglesby, Eric Vandenheuvel and the rest of the Wisconsin offensive line. Brendan can rush the passer there's no doubt about that but there are some things he's going to need to get good at in a hurry.
There were some plays where I saw Kelly stand straight-up at the line-of-scrimmage. That won't cut it in the Big Ten. He's going to need to learn how to anchor, stick his foot in the dirt and play the run. Kelly will have to use his hands, press blocks and keep a rooted base.
Overall, I see a terrific athlete, with great size, strength and athletic ability. Once Brendan Kelly adjusts to the significant upgrade in competition, he could end up being a solid force for the Badgers at defensive end.
