The rumors have been flying and now a couple of sources have gone on record confirming the story that Defensive Backs Coach Ron Cooper is leaving for Mississippi State as the new defensive coordinator.
Footballscoop.com reported the news Sunday afternoon, and earlier today the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel also let the cat out of the bag.
Mississippi State Coach Jackie Sherrill is expected to make the announcement tomorrow.
Coach Barry Alvarez, at a press conference a few hours ago, stated he will lose an assistant, but did not mention Cooper by name. He said there will be a release, probably on Wednesday.
"When you have good assistants, people are always looking," Alvarez said. "When you hire guys, you always know if they are quality guys and they want to be head coaches, there are promotions and professional steps that are going to be available to them. That's always one of the things that, you don't want to see it happen but it's going to happen."
Cooper, who has only been with the UW program for one season, is expected to stay through the Alamo Bowl, but that is not confirmed yet.
One major concern is how the move will affect the Badgers' recruiting. Roderick Rogers, who committed to Wisconsin this weekend, told Badger Nation last night that Cooper was a primary reason he committed ot the program. But Rogers has already indicated to the UW staff that he plans to keep his commitment.
Cooper contacted all of his recruits last night to inform them of the news.
Badger Nation will attempt to reach Texas recruits such as commitment Johnny White following the official announcement, to see where they stand.
