Spring Practice Report: Day Seven

As the Badgers hit the midpoint of spring football practice, they moved outside to the turf of Camp Randall Stadium and enjoyed a drill-less Saturday with two hours of scrimmaging, with a few UW players standing out.

MADISON — The University of Wisconsin football team ditched the Dave McClain Center to head outside on a chilly but pleasant Saturday morning in Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers scrimmaged for the first time this spring, complete with referees, chain gangs and tackling on everybody but the quarterbacks. Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema had stressed on Thursday that he wanted "optimal" conditions for his quarterbacks to operate in game situations. With temperatures in the mid-40s and few wind breezes, his team was able to get that before snow hits Madison again at the start of next week.

The team worked on everything from long field drives to red zone opportunities, and of course, the running game was on display with a couple of bright spots in the passing attack.

From the Infirmary

With harder contact came more injury concerns, as UW has continued to be fairly fortunate this spring. Linebacker Erik Prather felt both sides of the injury coin, dishing out pain and substaining it himself, more so than anyone else.

Prather went down behind the play on an Erik Smith run, grabbing his right knee and screaming in pain. The team moved to the other side of the Camp Randall gridiron to continue practice, and Prather was on the ground for 10 minutes being attended to by five trainers before being carted off.

Bielema said he didn't know what happened with Prather, and didn't offer any sort of diagnosis as to the severity of his injury.

Other than that, Bielema claimed the team came out of Saturday's session pain-free, though there were guys nicked up during the course of the morning. Earlier in practice, Prather leveled Rob Korslin after catching a pass from Jon Budmayr, and was helped up after a few minutes.

Running back John Clay was taken down by Shane Carter by the ankles, and hobbled off with a right ankle issue before returning to action a couple series later. Late in the scrimmage, receiver T.J. Theus was tripped up on a deep pass by Curt Phillips and required assistance, but it didn't seem to be serious.

Individual and 7-on-6 work

Just a few notes from warm-ups. Right at the end of individual drills, receiver Nate Emanuel made an impressive one-handed grab right in front of a few reporters on the right sideline on a 20-yard out route from Budmayr.

First-string quarterback Dustin Sherer started strong in the skeleton drill, completing his first three passes to Nick Toon, Theus and Mickey Turner. But then his fourth pass was knocked out of Kyle Jefferson's hands by Aubrey Pleasant, and was picked off by Antonio Fenelus looking for Theus again before finishing with a low throw caught by Smith.

Curt Phillips was 3-for-4 in his skelly session, including a touchdown throw that showed off that big arm of his. Toon beat Fenelus in coverage and caught the long ball for what would have been a 65-yard score or so. Budmayr was 1-for-3, with the only catch being bobbled first by tailback Zach Brown. Linebacker Kevin Rouse hauled in an interception on Budmayr's last throw.
