Badgers Fall to 0--2 in Big Ten

Wisconsin's first week of action in the Big Ten Conference ended with a disappointing loss at Illinois, dropping the Badgers to 0-2 in the conference.

The UW men's basketball team dropped their second consecutive conference game losing to No. 10 Illinois 69-63 Saturday. The Badgers are now 10-4 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.

The Big Ten's leading scorer Brian Cook led the Illini with 31 points. Cook, who came into the game averaging 21 points per contest, shot 12 for 19 from the field. Illinois improved its record to 12-1 on the season.

Wisconsin jumped out to a 23-19 advantage midway through the first half. However, the Badgers were held to seven points in the closing 10 minutes of the first half and went into the break with a 36-30 deficit. Freshman James Augustine paced Illinois with 13 first half points.

Coming out of the break Illinois went on a 9-0 run to start the half and increase its advantage to 45-30. The Badgers missed 12 of their first 13 field goal attempts in the second half. Wisconsin was limited to 45 percent shooting from the field including a four for 17 mark from three-point range.

Although Illinois managed to maintain their lead for the entire second half, the Badgers cut the deficit to six in the final minute of the game. The Illini made four free throws in the closing minutes to seal the victory.

Kirk Penney led the Badgers with 18 points making eight of 19 field goal attempts. Freshman Alando Tucker added 12 and Devin Harris scored 10 for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin next plays Jan. 15 against Minnesota in the Badgers conference home opener. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
