The 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman told Wyoming coaches he was leaving for "personal reasons," the UW Sports Information Department reported earlier this month. He would have been entering his redshirt freshman season with the Cowboys. Instead, Kottom will be donning the maroon and gold of his home state Gophers, a school which recruited him heavily during his senior year at Eden Prairie high school.
"It was not the right fit for me after a year," Kottom told Chris Monter of Goldensports.net. "I was there and I just said, ‘This is not going to work out for me,' and overall, I thought about it and decided Minnesota was the best place for me."
"I wished that I had gone there in the first place," he added. "I was really ecstatic when I talked to coach (Tim) Brewster (Minnesota Head Coach), and he was excited to have me."
Kottom received a release from UW in late June and said he contacted Minnesota coaches the day he received the fax from Wyoming. "It was pretty much a done deal from there," he said.
He will have to wait until 2008 to take the field for the Golden Gophers. NCAA rules require a year of ineligibility after a transfer between programs. He will also have to earn his keep on his new squad.
"I'm…walking on with hopes of earning a scholarship and playing," Kottom said. "I'm really excited."
He said being closer to family and friends had a lot to do with the decision to transfer.
"You have to like where you are at and I like it here, and I always have. So that was an easy decision."
Kottom's father played football at the University of Minnesota at Morris, his uncle played basketball at St. Olaf College (Minnesota) and a grandfather played football and basketball at Augsburg (Minneapolis, Minn.).
Kottom would likely have earned the No. 2 spot on the depth chart at either center or tackle for the Cowboys in 2007.
