Only One Freshman Left for UW's Season-Opener

Just when we told you Muojeke was primed for a breakout year, a preseason knee injury seems to have relegated him to the bench--for the rest of the season. Schroyer's decision to redshirt the athletic wing man wasn't the only news involving Wyoming freshmen. Find out who else will be sitting out Saturday's season opener.

One step forward, three steps back?

Personnel-wise, that might seem like the theme of the Pokes' season-opener this Saturday. Fortunately for Wyoming fans, it won't last forever.

The Cowboys get sharp-shooting wing man Eric Platt back after shin splints kept the sophomore out of the team's two exhibition games. But they won't get any help from three of their newcomers.

Head basketball coach Heath Schroyer announced Wednesday that freshmen Marios Matalon, Mikhail Linskens and Afam Muojeke will all be unavailable for play against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs this weekend.

Matalon and Linskens must sit out several games each to satisfy NCAA rules regarding international players, and Muojeke will redshirt the 2007-08 season. Matalon will miss the Pokes' first three regular-season contests while Linskens must sit out the first five games.

"We were aware when we recruited Marios and Mikhail that they may have to sit out some games due to playing on international teams in Europe," said Schroyer. "But we were willing to face missing them for a few games to get these outstanding two young men and two outstanding players into our program. The NCAA looks at how much each individual plays with their international team and then makes a determination on how many games each individual must sit out.

For Muojeke, a preseason injury was the deciding factor.

"In making the decision to redshirt Afam, we took into consideration that he had twisted his knee the first week of practice, which set him back in his development a little bit," Schroyer said. "I believe Afam has a very bright future ahead of him at Wyoming, but we felt it was best to give him an opportunity to get healthy and develop physically for a year."

That makes Wyoming native Adam Waddell the lone active freshman on the roster for Saturday's match-up with the Mountain Lions. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. Mountain Time from Wyoming's Arena-Auditorium.
