Laramie, Wyo. -- University of Wyoming head basketball coach Heath Schroyer announced on Tuesday that injured freshman center Adam Waddell will sit out of competition the remainder of the 2007-08 season and will apply for a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA.
Waddell, a freshman from Cody, Wyo., played in only six games this season before suffering a stress fracture in his left foot. He meets the guidelines to be granted a medical hardship year from the NCAA.
The major guidelines for being granted the hardship waiver are: a student-athlete's injury must occur in the first half of his team's season, and the student-athlete cannot have played in more than 30 percent of his team's total competitions for the year.
"In making this decision with Adam, we determined that it would be in his best interest and the best interest of our program that he use the remainder of this season to rehabilitate his injury," said Schroyer. "I believe that Adam will be a significant contributor to our program over the next four years, and we don't want him to jeopardize his health or future by rushing back from this injury."
The application for medical hardship is made to a student-athlete's conference office at the conclusion of the season. If granted a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete is granted an extra year of eligibility. Waddell would have four years of eligibility remaining if granted the hardship.
The 6-foot-9 Wyoming native was averaging 4.0 points, 1.7 rebounds and 11.7 minutes per game through his first six contests.
