Size is a tremendous asset in the game of basketball. But so are quick feet, a low cross over, and a knack for putting the ball in the rim. At just 5'9 and 150 pounds, class of 2015 Dunbar (OH) High School point guard A.J. Harris possesses all of the above minus the height, at this point but that doesn't prevent him from being courted by several high major college basketball programs.
"I'd describe myself as a P-G passer," Harris told GoBlueWolverine. "A point guard that likes to pass the ball and get his teammates involved. I'll score when I need to."
After a strong AAU season playing alongside fellow Michigan targets in the 2015 class, Nate Fowler and Luke Kennard, Harris has become a priority to the Wolverines in his own right, and he made it up to Ann Arbor for an unofficial visit the day of the Michigan/Michigan State game.
"The game was nice," said Harris. "I liked it. It was crazy though. It was really crazy. All of the fans supporting the players and Michigan won it."
"I got to see how the University was," added Harris. "My impression of it was it was really nice. I liked it. The campus is spaced out too much for me but everything else was cool. The gymnasium, athletic sports medicine was cool, and the education. Everything was nice. The coaches are cool too."
Harris was also able to take in one of the Wolverines pre-season practices, which made a significant impact on the left-handed point.
"Practice was intense," said Harris. "Up tempo. Everything fast pace and non-stop. I loved it."
"I was watching Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr.," added Harris. "I was just really watching them ‘cause they were playing the two spot and the one spot. So my main focus was on those two as far as how they played overall, how they play the point guard position and the shooting guard position."
Harris' lead recruiter for Michigan is Wolverine assistant coach Jeff Meyer who's been able to make significant in roads in the state of Ohio.
"We have a tight bond, tight relationship," said Harris. "Next week or two weeks he said he was going to be down at one of my open gyms, and he said he was going to come to some of my games. They told me to keep my academics up and keep playing basketball well as I've been doing. They'll stay in touch if I do."
