The 6-foot-7 forward announced on Twitter Wednesday night that he is transferring out of Xavier. MusketeerReport later confirmed the news through a source.
"Well Xavier! It's been nice," Cantino tweeted with a peace sign emoticon.
The JUCO transfer from Palm Beach State College sat out last season as a redshirt after getting a late start with the team due to his pending NCAA eligibility case.
The Musketeers took a flyer on Cantino after Dez Wells was expelled from the school. Even with a year in the system though, the forward never quite found a fit on the roster, and wasn't in line to see much playing time this year with other talented forwards on the team, such as Isaiah Philmore, Jalen Reynolds, Justin Martin, James Farr and Kamall Richards.
Instead, Cantino will transfer down a level to avoid sitting out his final year of eligibility per the NCAA's transfer rule, which doesn't apply to a student-athlete moving down in divisions. A source confirmed that Pikeville, an NAIA program that competes in the Mid-South Conference, is the most likely destination for Cantino, adding that it was "already 90 percent done."
