O'Mara Commits to Xavier

Tuesday night Illinois center Sean O'Mara committed to Chris Mack and his staff to complete an impressive 2014 recruiting class.

With a combo guard, a sharp-shooting wing and a face-up forward already in the fold for the 2014 recruiting class, head coach Chris Mack and his staff were in search of a space-eating center to finish off the class.

Tuesday night they landed the final piece to the class when 6-foot-9, 23 0-pound Sean O'Mara committed to the Musketeers. O'Mara, who also stars on the football team at Benet Academy in Illinois, chose Xavier after a long decision-making process between committing to the school in Cincinnati and staying home at Loyola in Chicago.

O'Mara also held offers from Illinois, Marquette, Iowa State, Saint Louis, DePaul, Boston College, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech among others. He took official visits to Wake Forest, Loyola and Xavier, with the Musketeers having the benefit of receiving the last visit. Even still it took three weeks before he pulled the trigger and committed to X.

The big man will provide the Musketeers with exactly what they were looking to add, which is a replacement for Matt Stainbrook. Like Stainbrook, O'Mara possesses good size and strength, while mostly playing below the rim. He also passes well and has an overall high basketball IQ. He can also face the basket and hit open jump shots.

As a junior at Benet Academy, O'Mara averaged 16 points and eight rebounds while helping lead his team to the East Suburban Catholic Conference title. During the summer he impressed Xavier coaches while playing for his IBA Select AAU team.

With the addition of the wide-bodied banger from Illinois, Mack and company have locked up a solid four-man class for 2014 that should keep the program rolling in the right direction headed into the Big East.
