Exactly two weeks to the day that Xavier announced Semaj Christon would be heading to the NBA draft, the program announced that Martin would be transferring with a quick press release on Friday afternoon just before 5 pm.
"Redshirt Junior Justin Martin has opted to transfer from the Xavier University men's basketball program. He will be granted permission to contact other institutions upon the completion of his remaining coursework to fulfill his undergraduate degree requirements."
Martin took to Twitter a few minutes later to announce his intentions and thank the Xavier community.
"I have decided to use my 5th year at another school. I sincerely thank Xavier and the xavier fans/community for the support and opportunity!" Martin tweeted. "It has been an experience of a lifetime to even play division 1 basketball. I will always be a musketeer and will always love Xavier!!"
Sources told MusketeerReport that the decision was finalized following a meeting between Mack and Martin earlier in the day on Friday.
After struggling to find consistency his first two seasons, Martin had a breakout junior year. He averaged 11.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in 28.2 minutes per game while knocking down 37.3 percent of his threes. His most memorable performance came in the Musketeers' blowout win over Crosstown rival Cincinnati when he scored 17 points and buried 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. He also came up with a 19-point, 16-rebound effort on 6-of-11 shooting in a must-win Big East victory over Creighton late in the season.
The Musketeers' cupboard is far from bare on the wing, though. Next year's recruiting class is loaded with two talented four-star scorers in Trevon Bluiett and J.P. Macura. Plus, they'll add versatile guard Remy Abell, an Indiana transfer that had to sit out last year, to the mix.
Combined with the news about Christon declaring for the draft (although we have some updated reports on that decision) and the transfer of Kamall Richards, Martin's departure puts Xavier one under the scholarship limit of 13 heading into the 2014-15 season.
