Breakdown: XU Takes Down No. 21 Georgetown

Rick takes a look with video examples at what went well for the Musketeers in Tuesday night's road win over No. 21 Georgetown.

Xavier entered the week with a 4-0 record at home in Big East play, and an 0-4 record on the road. More importantly, the Musketeers lacked a single quality road win on their resume.

They helped that issue by capturing a 66-53 win over No. 21 Georgetown in the nation's capital Tuesday night. Xavier took the lead for good with 14:02 to play in the first half on a pair of free throws by Trevon Bluiett. A three by Bluiett with 10:21 to play in the second half gave the Musketeers their largest lead of the night, 48-30. Myles Davis led Xavier in scoring again with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go with five assists, two steals and no turnovers.

Over the course of the season, no player on Xavier's roster has played with as much confidence consistently as Myles Davis. Over the last two games in particular, he's played the role of go-to man for the Musketeers on the offensive end. Whether he's burying clutch threes or creating off the dribble, Davis has been their best weapon of late.

In the video below he gets the offense jump started and breaks the 3-3 tie that lasted for seemingly the first four minutes of the game by attacking D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera aggressively off of the bounce.

This is another drive early in the game where Davis rejects Bluiett's screen and attacks an uncertain L.J. Peak off the bounce. This is a nice finish by Davis, something he's done well all season.

And this dagger three in the first half pushed Xavier's lead to 15 points. Myles is yelling at Dee all the way down the court to hit him as a trailer, and then Dee just dribbles into the lead defender and simultaneously tosses a little back pitch to Myles for the long three. This kept X's momentum going for the final minutes into halftime.

This is another big three by Myles at the end of the first half. He makes a nice shot, but the play is really made by Stainbrook. With the shot clock winding down (13 seconds), Stainbrook manhandles Hopkins to create space, receives a pass from Macura and then finds Myles spacing into the open area in the corner for a good look.

Myles Davis combined with fellow backcourt mate Dee Davis to dish out 11 assists with only one turnover in the win. While Myles was able to create a lot of points for himself as well, Dee has not been putting the ball in the basket very often over the last two games. However, he's still been able to provide Xavier with a lift on the offensive end. In the first half of this game, both teams were stagnant offensively and it was a slow-paced physical game. Each team's players looked like they wanted to rest while on the offensive end after exerting all their energy on defense. Davis helped spark the Musketeers by picking up the pace and the energy on offense. This helped them start to pull away initially.

Here's a look at Davis rescuing a stagnant possession by attacking off the bounce and drawing a foul.

Dee attacks off the bounce.

Later in the first half, he gives the Musketeers a little spark out of the timeout and pushes their lead to double-digits, 19-8, just by playing with energy and pace. He runs hard on one of XU's most basic actions of their offense - a lob pass to Stainbrook at the high post in the horns formation and a rub off his hip to the basket - and gets a big layup out of it.

Dee Davis gets an easy layup.

Early in the second half, Dee directs traffic here telling Myles to clear out of the paint, allowing Stainbrook plenty of room to seal Hopkins off in the high post and go catch a lob pass. This was great scouting, preparation and recognition by Xavier's players. They knew they would get this look throughout the game from Georgetown's defense and were successfully able to take advantage of it a few times throughout the game. Stainbrook does a masterful job of setting this up by walking Hopkins up the lane first and then sealing him. Also, this pass from Dee is perfect.

Georgetown cut its deficit to single-digits just inside the three-minute mark. After a few failed possessions in a row, here's what X went back to. Another great pass by Dee.

There are a ton of possessions from this game that could be used as good examples of Xavier getting the job done on the defensive end. I tried to find some of the most impressive or most meaningful ones.

The Musketeers rotate perfectly on this play; everyone keeps the floor tight, stays active and moving in unison, and then they do a great of crowding Josh Smith in the post. We always talk about the guards crowding or "digging" without doubling when properly offering help in the post within Xavier's pack line defense, and on this play Reynolds bodies the big man up and then Bluiett and Davis display this technique perfectly, resulting in a turnover by Smith.

XU forces Josh Smith into a travel.

This possession in the first half ends up in a missed jumper by DSR. This is a great example of why the pack line can be a very successful defense when its played properly. Look how well Xavier crowds the court and is able to help temporarily on DSR and discourage his shots while allowing Abell to recover from the screens being set. Also, X finishes off the stop with Dee Davis grabbing the defensive rebounding. The guards getting involved on the glass has been a huge key to their defensive success the last two games.

Another great defensive possession in the first half earns a missed jumper by DSR.

Here is DSR's first bucket of the game. It's also one of the few defensive breakdowns X had. Abell reads a screen coming from Hopkins (Farr's man) after DSR catches the ball, but Hopkins never actually comes to screen. Knowing that he can't let DSR reject a ball screen and thinking that he has Farr jumping out to hedge, Abell positions himself to give up a drive towards the middle of the court. DSR gladly takes it and scores on a little floater. Fortunately for Xavier, Abell sprints back on offense and gets a layup to answer right back.

DSR scores first points but Abell answers at other end.

This defensive stop felt, at least to me, the one that sealed the win. With 2:25 left to start the possession, Georgetown still had enough time to come back from its nine-point deficit. The most impressive part was Jalen Reynolds hedging the ball screen against Trawick, forcing Dee Davis to hold against Josh Smith, but Reynolds recovers just in time to prevent an entry pass from DSR on the wing. Even after Peak is able to slide past Dee Davis on the baseline, Reynolds finishes off the stop with a block.

X gets a key stop down the stretch.

Xavier executed well throughout this game, particularly in moments where Georgetown was gaining some momentum and had a chance to get back in it.

It started early on in the first half. Here's a look at a possession that got off to a slow start, but Dee Davis comes up to get the ball and reset the offense with 20 left on the shot clock. He gets a call from the bench, and the Musketeers execute a nice little quick hitter action with Abell setting a baseline screen for Myles Davis and then a backscreen for Stainbrook who slips to the block to receive a great pass from Myles for an easy layup. The timing and precision on this play is perfect.

X runs a quick hitter for Stainbrook.

This is with 12:50 left in the second half after Josh Smith had just cut Georgetown's deficit to 10, 40-30. The crowd was getting loud and the Hoyas had the momentum so Chris Mack called a timeout and drew this play up. It's a screen the screener action for Trevon Bluiett. Bluiett sets a screen for Dee Davis which causes his man to shade towards the middle to help, meanwhile Stainbrook sets up a flare screen for Bluiett who pops out to the wing for a wide open three that rattles high off the backboard before falling through.

Bluiett hits a second half three.

A video posted by @rickbroering on

This is a few minutes later with 10:30 left in the game. The Musketeers run another set to free Bluiett for a three. First they start by having Myles Davis fake a flare screen for Bluiett, similar to the play above. Bluiett doesn't use it though, and Davis just pops out to the top of the key to catch the ball. The freshman Copeland relaxes thinking he snuffed out the play this time, but Bluiett immediately sprints through the lane and around a double-screen set by Dee Davis and Jalen Reynolds for another open three look from the right wing. Extending the lead to 18 with 10 minutes left in the game felt significant when it happened. Also, these last two plays are great plays by themselves, but I find them to be even more interesting when sequenced the way they were.

Bluiett comes off a double screen for another three.

A video posted by @rickbroering on

And then they put the Hoyas away with this old crowd favorite. The non-verbal communication between Dee Davis and Matt Stainbrook make this play. Also, I like Davis' smirk before inbounding and his nonchalant pass. What made all of it better was that there was only two seconds left on the shot clock, so any other play would have likely ended with a hurried, tough shot.

Chris Mack special.
