Breakdown: Perimeter defense costs X

Rick takes a look at some of what went wrong for the Musketeers in Saturday's loss.

After picking up its first Big East road win of the season at Georgetown on Tuesday night, Xavier failed to make it two in a row Saturday afternoon, falling at Seton Hall 90-82.

The game came down to 3-point shooting. Seton Hall hit 9-of-24 (37.5%) threes while the Musketeers could only muster a 1-for-19 (5.3%) performance from distance against the Pirates' matchup zone. As a result, they fell to 5-5 in Big East play, including 1-5 on the road.

Xavier needs to shoot better or they won't win many games. Everyone seems to agree on that. However, something that has been a reoccurring issue at times this season (and even going back to last season) is Xavier's inability to defend the perimeter. The Musketeers rank 225th in college basketball in 3-point percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot 35.1 percent. With 3-pointers playing such a big role in this Seton Hall loss and multiple postgame message board posters mentioning Xavier's struggles to defend the perimeter, I figured it was time for another look at how X's opponent was able to get so many looks from three.

One of the top rules in the pack line defense is that when your man is cutting you have no help responsibilities. Your only job is to follow the cutter. The PIrates do a great job of utilizing that against the Musketeers on this play. They cleared out the side of the court that they were running a ball-screen on by sending Jaren Sina off a double screen to the right wing, and then Brandon Mobley pops off the ball screen out to the left wing. Stainbrook owns the ball screen until Abell recovers, leaving Mobley all by himself. Dee Davis was originally in the position of being the help defender for Stainbrook that would have closed out on the shooter, but then his man (Sina) became a cutter running off a double-screen and he had to follow him. He was clearly confused or knew X wasn't going to properly cover Seton Hall's action in this situation because he didn't really fight through the screen to get out on Sina and looked to be pointing to Mobley on the perimeter instructing Myles Davis to close out on him. The execution and timing by Seton Hall is perfect on this. I'm not sure there is a great answer for how to defend this play.

On this one, Sina knocks down a contested shot late in the shot clock. Dee Davis maybe could have been a little more aggressive coming off that switch and putting pressure on him, but it's more of a tip your cap shot than anything else.

Here's Mobley's second three of the game. He initially sets a screen for Sterling Gibbs to come up and get the ball, and then casually floats behind the arc to create a passing lane and set up for his shot. Gibbs runs off a high screen set by Delgado, and when makes a great read by firing a pass over to Mobley when he sees Trevon Bluiett pinching in to help on Delgado who Reynolds just left to own the ball screen.

Here Dee Davis is guarding Gibbs as he runs across the baseline and then off of a double screen to receive the ball high on the right wing. Jalen Reynolds does a good job of helping Davis, but he's supposed to stay on the ball until Davis says he's "good," recovered in a stable defensive position. Whether Davis does this and Reynolds is just basically setting an inadvertent screen on him as they're trying to switch back, or Reynolds just flat out leaves the ball early is unclear, but either way you can't leave the ball like that, especially when it's a shooter like Gibbs.

Seton Hall runs a nice little action here. They have Reynolds' man (Rashed Anthony) go and set a screen on Dee Davis who is guarding Gibbs with the ball. Isaiah Whitehead, who is being guarded by Remy Abell, is positioned at the free-throw line. Knowing that Abell is Reynolds' first line of help and will initially have to bump Anthony on the roll after the screen, Seton Hall waits for this to occur and then sends Whitehead out to the top of the key for a 3-point look while trying to use Anthony as a screener. Whitehead leaves a little too early and Abell actually reads the play well and does a good job of not getting screened, but then Whitehead creates a little space with the dribble and still hits the pull-up three.

Here Macura is trying to be a good teammate and be in his gap in the pack line. At first he's perfect, but then Sina spaces down closer to the corner and Macura doesn't adjust. He's a step too far away to close out and alter Sina's look. It wasn't terrible defense. Sina deserves some credit for hitting a shot that you can get in almost any time in any college basketball game, but Macura's awareness could probably be a little better when guarding a shooter of that caliber as well.

This one is the result of poor communication between Dee Davis and Remy Abell. The Musketeers had one of their smaller lineups on the court with Bluiett at the four and they were switching pretty much everything. Even though this isn't a screen between Whitehead and Gibbs, they still often switch when players trade places. It appears Davis assumes they are switching while Abell stays with his man. That leaves Gibbs wide open, so they both fly at him and he hits the now wide open Whitehead in the corner.

Xavier has to do a better job of defending the 3-point line and defending in general, but at the same time I could show just as many clips where Xavier got wide open looks and just couldn't make them. Seton Hall deserves the credit for hitting the shots - mostly open and a few tough ones. The Musketeers are a team built on their offense and skill, so they can't afford to miss all the looks they had that could have swung the game in their favor.

Here's a look at a few other random takeaways I had when re-watching the game:

Myles Davis had a brilliant stretch in the first half when Xavier made its big 17-1 run. He did a lot of good things including score, but here are two reasons why I think he makes such a good secondary point guard for this team right now. Both of these are beautiful finds and precisely executed passes.

Myles to Matt to Jimmy.

Something that has stood out to me more recently as I've watched other talented defensive teams are the way that they're able to protect the rim. Even good defensive teams without a bonafide shot-blocker have someone who can protect the rim to some extent. When the Musketeers don't have Farr or Reynolds on the floor, they don't have any rim protection whatsoever. Stainbrook can execute perfectly on defense but that's just something he'll never be able to provide. That puts a lot of pressure on all perimeter defenders to be perfect when it comes to keeping the ball in front of them, and with Xavier's lack of foot speed on defense that's asking a lot.

Here's an example of what Farr's shot blocking can provide for them. Seton Hall is running a play for Gibbs that the Spurs run for Tony Parker all the time. He passes off to the top of the key and then runs all the way around the court on a big loop around two staggered screens (they'll often do this with three screens), curling off the second one and looking to attack. Abell fights through the screens pretty well, but Myles Davis gives him help initially. Gibbs quickly pitches to Davis' man (Carrington) who is able to easily attack a recovering Davis off the bounce. Farr then saves an easy bucket by stepping up at the last second from his man and erasing the shot.

Farr blocks Gibbs.

Reynolds was great in this game. There were a lot of highlights that could be shown of him. This was one of the more mature plays I saw him make that shows me that he's getting it. It's something we've seen Stainbrook do a lot. As soon as he comes down the court he's posting hard and calling for the ball from Dee Davis, but when he notices his defender fronting him he does what X's big men are taught and uses it against him. He spins off Anthony and seals him on his backside while rolling from the right to the left side of the lane. Dee Davis passes over to Myles Davis on the wing for a better entry angle and Reynolds finishes off another and-one. Patience and recognition are dangerous tools for him.

Reynolds finishes an and-one.
