Notebook: XU makes statement against Butler

Rick takes a look at the impact this week had on Xavier's tournament resume, breaks down video of top plays from the first half, and makes other observations that may not have shown up in the stat sheet.

After losing to St. John's last Saturday at the Cintas Center, Xavier needed a big week.

The Musketeers ended up getting that big week in the form of a 2-0 performance in back-to-back games at rival Cincinnati in the Crosstown Shootout and home against Butler Saturday afternoon. The win over Butler served as an impressive statement for a team fighting to stay on the right side of the bubble, as Xavier routed the 19th-ranked Bulldogs 73-56.

The win set a school record as it marked the Musketeers' fourth win over a top 25 opponent this season. Xavier is now 5-4 against teams in the top 50 of the RPI and 9-6 against the top 100, with four of those wins coming against top 25 teams. The undefeated Kentucky Wildcats currently have four wins over teams ranked in the top 25 of the RPI as well.

Xavier now likely only needs to beat Creighton, ranked 136th in the RPI, out of its last three games to feel good about its chances for an at-large bid heading into the Big East tournament. If the Musketeers steal a win at St. John's or at home against Villanova to go with the win over the Bluejays then they could very well be looking at moving up a seed line or two.

The Bracket Matrix aggregate currently has Xavier in as a nine seed, with 94 of the 96 used bracketologists including the Musketeers in their projections.

Video Breakdown

Here's a look at some of the plays that stood out from the first half:

Xavier's ball movement was great throughout the game, and it started on the very first possession. This is one of those plays that very few big men in the country will ever make. Stainbrook is unselfish to a fault at times, but with the way Myles is shooting the ball this pass was a great find that worked out well for the Musketeers. Knowing it had an advantage inside with Chrabascz out, X was smart to get it inside to Stainbrook right away to see how the Bulldogs were going to defend him in the post, and the big man does the rest.

Xavier played well on the defensive end regardless of whether they were in man-to-man or zone. This possession early in the game is a great example of how the packline is supposed to look. Dunham splits the initial side ball screen and maybe should have attacked Stainbrook more there, but look at how tight Xavier's defense is there. He's not a great creator off the bounce and if nothing else the Musketeers staying tight on defense created the illusion that he had nowhere to go. As he looks to pass, Dee Davis and Myles Davis do a great job of playing from the inside out while recovering to their men. When Barlow catches the ball with a step on Dee, Myles is already in help position and he doesn't have to worry about getting out to a non-shooter in Roosevelt Jones on the perimeter. This creates indecision on the part of Barlow and Myles makes the steal which leads to the transition bucket.

Myles steal. Abell finish.

Xavier did a great job of making the game easy. They took advantage of Butler's weaknesses, and played smart, unselfish basketball. This is another great pass by Stainbrook. The Bulldogs didn't have an answer for the big man one-on-one, which forced them to make decisions on how to help against him.

When Butler is in trouble and it needs a bucket, Jones gets the ball and takes over. He uses his body to get into the lane against a defender and he makes a play, either by scoring with his unorthodox mid-range game or making the defense collapse on him and assisting a teammate. Xavier switched to the zone for the final war of the first half and it really took away Jones' offensive game when the Bulldogs needed it most with Kellen Dunham on the bench with three fouls. This is when Xavier was making its run to close the half. It was obvious that Jones wanted to make a play, but Reynolds' length was taking away his driving lanes initially. Once he found enough of a crease he was able to get into the lane, but Xavier had big bodies in Stainbrook and Reynolds camped in the lane that he couldn't bowl into and finish through. X had done a pretty good job with its man-to-man defense to this point, but the switch to zone was a great call that really stagnated the Bulldogs' offense for the stretch run of the first half.

We've talked about how it's much easier to hide Stainbrook and keep him on the court in the zone defense, but against Butler he also made a nice impact at the bottom of the zone as a clog in the middle of the lane. After stopping Jones on the previous possession, this time he shuts down a Kelan Martin drive into the lane.

- When you play as fast as Xavier did on Saturday (71 possessions, 11 fast break points), the other team is going to get transition opportunities too. X did a great job of stopping the ball in transition defense against Butler, something they've struggled with at times this season, especially in the St. John's game. Butler didn't exactly have Sir'Dominic Pointer running the break, but the Musketeers did a good job of just stopping the ball and not worrying about finding "their man."

- Something that flew under the radar is how well Bluiett and the rest of the team held its own early on the glass while playing small against the Bulldogs. Bluiett was matched up with Woods at both ends, and he held his own on the glass while creating matchup problems on offense. That not only allowed Xavier to dictate the pace, but it also set the tone for the toughness that X played with throughout the game.

- Myles David did a pretty good job defending Roosevelt Jones early in the game, but his teammates did a phenomenal job of helping him. Stainbrook and Reynolds both had weak side blocks on Jones within the first five minutes of the game. It's incredible to see how far Davis' overall game has come in the last year, but his defense is often overshadowed by the strides he's made on offense. Saturday against Butler he showed off his improvements at both ends. In addition to guarding Jones, he did a great job off the ball playing help side in the pack line, and he also had four steals.

- Matt Stainbrook only had four points and one rebound against Butler. That stat line is rather underwhelming, but it was actually a pretty solid performance for the senior center. First of all, he only had to play 18 minutes total in the second game of one of the Musketeers' toughest stretches of the season, which they'll cap off Monday night at St. John's when they face their third opponent in six days. Being able to rest him was absolutely huge for X. Second, he had five assists and one turnover on the offensive end. When he was on the court, Butler had no answer for him on the offensive end and he caught the ball deep to put the Bulldogs in a bad situation on defense before finding an open teammate for a basket. He also seemed to be moving better than he has been recently when it came to hedging ball screens, recovering to his man in the halfcourt, and just running the floor in general. Defensively, he also had two blocks and made an impact on the bottom of the 1-3-1 zone as illustrated in the video breakdown section.
