Names to Watch

Rick takes a look at a few players from the Adidas event in Indianapolis with Xavier interest who could have earned offers with their play over the weekend.

Here’s a look at a few players from the Adidas Event in Indianapolis that stood out. Xavier is showing interest in all of these guys and assistant coach Mike Pegues watched them on Sunday.

James Banks, Atlanta Celtics – The 2016 big man’s recruitment could be on the verge of exploding. He received offers from NC State and Syracuse recently to go with Tulsa and Georgia Southern. There were also high majors from every conference watching his Atlanta Celtics team all weekend, so plenty of coaches had the chance to witness his potential first hand. He’s currently 6-foot-10, 230-pounds, but he has the frame to be a very muscular 245 or so easily. He’s long, athletic and can legitimately protect the rim on the defensive end. Offensively, he’s still very much a work in progress in terms of developing low post moves and his footwork, but he showed some touch and found his own points with effort on the glass. He used to play at St. Francis High School in Alpharetta, Georgia, also known as Kaiser Gates’ high school. However, he transferred to Mount Vernon Presbyterian. He averaged 23 points and 14 rebounds in his junior season of high school, and 7.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in four games over the weekend. He plays alongside Braxton Blackwell (4-star forward) and Kobi Simmons (5-star guard), so offensive opportunities are somewhat limited.

Xavier Green, Team Loaded – The 2016 wing plays on the same team as Jeremy Carter-Sheppard and Javin DeLaurier, a few 2016 guys that already have Xavier offers. The 6-foot-6 wing has a smooth all-around game. On the offensive end, he was smooth with the ball in his hands and looked liked he knew how to play. He passed well and made good decisions, but at times I would have liked to see him be a little more assertive when looking for his shot. The few shots he did take didn’t look all that confident. He doesn’t project to be a big-time scorer at the next level, but he is a guy that could add versatility to your lineup as a long two or three. He also really rebounds the ball well at both ends, despite being skinny. He just seems to have a nose for the ball when it’s coming off the rim. It will be interesting to see how his game develops once he adds strength. He has offers from Cincinnati, Hampton, Old Dominion, James Madison and Mount St. Mary’s.

Richard Washington, Team Loaded – Like his teammate, the 2016 wing has a strong all-around game and can add versatility to any roster. Unlike Green, he has the mentality of a bucket-getter when he catches the ball on the wing. He showed the ability to score from the perimeter or the mid-range off of the dribble. He also has a better frame with a little more strength than Green. He showed good effort on the glass, and the lateral mobility to defend multiple positions. On Sunday, he scored 15 points (4-11 3PT) and dished out three assists during a morning viewing. He currently has offers from Wake Forest, Old Dominion, James Madison, High Point, Hofstra, Longwood, East Carolina and Radford.
