Breakdown: Xavier wins opener against Miami, 81-72

Rick uses video examples to examine Edmond Sumner's performance, Xavier's defensive struggles and a go-to play for Jalen Reynolds.

Sumner's Performance

As I wrote after the game on Friday, I thought Edmond Sumner's performance in his first start was a major bright spot for the Musketeers on an otherwise subpar night.

Sumner flashed his impressive athletic ability, and most of all I was impressed with his aggressive approach in attacking Miami's defense. The Redhawks did a good job of changing up their ball screen defense throughout the game. They often downed screens and then tried to take away passing lanes, essentially disrupting offensive flow and forcing the ball handler to play one-on-one. Out of Xavier's guards, Sumner did the best job of using the driving lanes and limited help defense this game-plan provided.

Sumner may have forced the issue on this one a little bit, but the ref made a terrible call on the charge. I liked Sumner's aggressiveness on the play. His defender jumped way out to down the ball screen early, and Sumner tried to make him pay by taking the driving lane without hesitation. He might should have read Bluiett's defender sliding in to take the charge and kicked it out for the three, but overall I didn't think it was a bad play for the freshman PG despite the outcome.

On this play, the Miami defender again tries to down the ball screen, but he doesn't do a good enough job so Sumner uses it anyway. Because Reynolds' man was expecting Sumner to reject the screen, he's not immediately in position to cut off the ball and Sumner comes off the screen with tons of room. From there Sumner is able to use exceptional change of speeds and the decoy of Myles Davis in the corner to get past Reynolds' man for an easy layup.

This time Miami plays the drag screen straight up - Sumner's defender goes under the screen and Reynolds' defender offers zero help. Sumner has the confidence to make them pay with a three. This is the huge difference between Semaj Christon and Sumner at this stage - defenses won't be able to go under every screen and sag off of Sumner to clog the lane.

Another ball screen situation where Miami downs it, forcing Sumner towards the baseline. He comes off the screen and makes a nice back-dribble hesitation move before using his burst to blow past both Miami defenders. Somehow there was no foul called on this play, but it was still a great move.

The most impressive part of Sumner's performance on Friday night was the way he finished off his drives into the lane. After the game, Chris Mack said he "finishes better than any point guard I've had at the rim because he's 6-6."

A video posted by @rickbroering on Nov 15, 2015 at 5:34pm PST

Sumner finished the game with only one assist and three turnovers, which obviously aren't ideal numbers for a point guard. Part of that goes back to Miami's defensive game-plan which was designed to force the ball handler to create on his own while simultaneously taking away passing lanes. Also, as we've talked about on the podcast, Sumner isn't going to be a distributing, Dee Davis-like point guard. His role is to be an aggressive playmaker and scorer for this offense. You can live with a few less assists and a few more turnovers out of your point guard if he's the leading scorer. As for the turnovers, I didn't feel like any of them should raise concerns about his decision-making or confidence as a floor general. He was called for a bad charge, the ball slipped out of his hands on a drive, and he made a bad read on a no-look pass in transition.

Sumner has some work to do defensively, as shown in the clips below, but overall it was a successful night for the redshirt freshman.

First Half Defensive Struggles

Xavier gave up 40 points and allowed Miami to average 1.18 points per possession in the first half, which was "unacceptable" according to Remy Abell.

The defensive struggles were similar to what I recall seeing last year early on with the Musketeers. It wasn't just one guy and it wasn't just one action. It was a combination of factors that all come down to not being quite mentally tough enough to play with proper intensity while also staying fully locked in at all times.

And Miami deserves some credit. After going back and watching the game again, the Redhawks created points in isolation situations, Eric Washington was great working off of ball screens, and they knocked down spot-up jumpers. Also, they were really good in end of shot clock situations. In the six possessions that came down to the final four seconds of the shot clock, Xavier only got one stop. Miami was 3-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-3 from distance, and drew two fouls on the Musketeers.

On this play, everybody's doing everything right, including Trevon Bluiett, but at the end of his closeout he bites on a shot fake, giving Rod Mills an easy pull-up jumper.

A video posted by @rickbroering on Nov 15, 2015 at 6:12pm PST

Not to pick on Bluiett, but this was a possession later. He's guarding a four here, but he and Larry Austin still decide to switch on the ball screen. Regardless of whether or not that's the correct call, Bluiett has to do a better job of moving his feet after the switch while guarding Washington. He reaches on the crossover and it ends up leading to an easy assist for Washington.

A video posted by @rickbroering on Nov 15, 2015 at 6:26pm PST

Whenever a ball handler splits Xavier's defense in a ball screen situation it's typically the fault of both the guard defending the ball and the big defending the screener. This happened a few times in this game. In this instance, the ref actually lets Miami's Chris Bryant get away with a little bit of a moving screen (supposedly a point of emphasis this year). Austin doesn't do a good enough job of fighting through the screen, and Reynolds jumps out way too far way too early (partially due to the moving screen) on his hedge, allowing Moore an easy lane to split the defense and score.

A video posted by @rickbroering on Nov 15, 2015 at 6:48pm PST

This play will look familiar for subscribers who read these breakdowns last year. With the way the Musketeers' big men jump ball screens, opposing teams often look to put a shooter on the same side as they run their ball screen to space the floor and put Xavier's help defender in a tough situation. This time it isn't a set play being ran, but the Redhawks get that look out of the natural flow of their offense. When Reynolds hedges the ball screen, Kaiser Gates is forced to bump his man on the roll, Davis isn't really recovering with high hands to make that passing lane any tougher on the throwback, and that's all it takes for Dion Wade to get a good look at a three.

A video posted by @rickbroering on Nov 15, 2015 at 6:53pm PST

And here are two examples of what JP Macura continues to struggle most with on defense, which is losing sight of his man when looking to help or gamble for a steal. The second one came with two seconds left on the shot clock on a side out of bounds play and cut Xavier's lead from seven to four.

Feeding the Beast

Miami didn't have much of an answer for Jalen Reynolds inside as he finished with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting (6-of-7 FTs) to go with 15 rebounds.

After the exhibition against Northwood, I mentioned that the Musketeers weren't running many (if any) set plays to get Reynolds involved yet, which is something they did really well last season. Against Miami, they ran a familiar baseline cross screen play for Reynolds to get him multiple looks. It was a play we saw them run different variations of last year with an extremely high success rate as well.

On this first one, after the in bounds exchange between Farr and Austin, Myles Davis barely sets a little brush screen for Reynolds and his man makes the whole play easier than it should be by doubling hard on Reynolds temporarily as Davis runs out to the right wing to receive a pass. Because Davis' man is nowhere to be found, Macura's man sprints out to guard the ball. Meanwhile, Macura is setting a cross screen for Reynolds and Farr seals off his own man so Davis has an easy passing lane to Reynolds for a lay-in.

A video posted by @rickbroering on Nov 15, 2015 at 8:07pm PST

This time they run a very similar look in the half court. Farr has his man drawn away from the rim at the high post. Bluiett sprints behind Macura to receive a pass on the left wing, and Macura sets a cross screen on Reynolds' man. Macura's man (Washington) switches onto Reynolds but never eyes the passer or sees the ball at all on this play, and is instead concerned with recovering to Macura. He leaves Reynolds before Reynolds' man is able to recover, and it leads to an easy dunk. Even had Washington stayed, X still would have had a major advantage with the 6-foot-10 Reynolds sealing the 5-foot-10 Washington.
