XU wins Advocare Invitational Championship

Xavier was dominant in three games at the Advocare Invitational in Orlando.

Xavier went to Orlando and completely destroyed a narrative that has been following Chris Mack's team for the last few years.

Since Mack took over as coach at Xavier, the Musketeers have gone 7-11 in holiday tournaments, including 1-5 in the last two years prior to this one. The theme was that X struggled away from the Cintas Center, and often lacked the toughness to pull off tight games on the road.

Sunday the Musketeers completed a three-game sweep at the Advocare Invitational by knocking off ex-conference rival Dayton, 90-61. They were never really challenged in their three wins over Alabama, Southern California and Dayton, finishing with an average margin of victory of 19.3 points in the event.

But in killing off one narrative, the Musketeers may have attached a completely new storyline to this year's team.

That tweet is from former Xavier player and Associate Head Coach Pat Kelsey, who is now the head coach at Winthrop. Had the tweet come from a national writer, I would have immediately dismissed it as hyperbole. But, coming from someone with great historical perspective and appreciation for the program, it gave me pause.

It's, at the very least, a fair question to ask after the way the Musketeers have performed over the last two weeks. They're balanced, they're skilled and they're playing with toughness on both ends of the court.

The gold standard when it comes to Xavier basketball teams is the 2007-08 squad that finished 30-7 and advanced to the Elite Eight before losing to a UCLA team that was loaded with future NBA stars, including Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love.

That team had great balance, with four players averaging double figures and two more averaging over 9.7 points per game. Josh Duncan (12.4 ppg) could shoot it from 3-point range, Derrick Brown (10.9 ppg) was a tremendous slasher and rebounder, Drew Lavender (10.8 ppg) was an electric playmaker that could shoot the three or create off the bounce, CJ Anderson (10.7 ppg) was a power bucket getter, BJ Raymond (9.9 ppg) could shoot it from three and score in other ways, and Stanley Burrell (9.7 ppg) was a good 3-point shooter and transition scorer in addition to being a lockdown defender. That team shot the three well, but it also got to the free throw line a lot. Over the course of the season, the Musketeers ended up ranked ninth in the country in offensive efficiency and 48th in defensive efficiency.

Any of that sound familiar?

This year's Xavier team has five players scoring in double figures, and James Farr averaging 9.4 points per game. The Musketeers have a versatile scorer in Trevon Bluiett, who is more talented than anyone on that '07-08 squad, leading the way at 14.3 points per game. They have an explosive point guard that is 6-6 and can also shoot the three in Edmond Sumner, averaging 11.4 points per game. They have an offensive dynamo off the bench in JP Macura (10.6 ppg) that can shoot from three or create for himself and his teammates off the bounce. Jalen Reynolds (10.1) is an athletic freak that creates matchup problems in the post and helps the team dominate the glass, and James Farr is nearly averaging a double-double in just 19.7 minutes per game as one of the most dominant rebounders the school has ever seen. That's not even mentioning Remy Abell (7.6 ppg), who is the team's best defender and also a capable shooter or driver when the defense isn't paying enough attention to him. This Xavier team isn't quite as efficient offensively right now as the '07-08 one finished the year; it's currently ranked 20th in the country. However, the current Musketeers are much better on the defensive end where they're ranked 16th in the nation.

It's difficult to even pick out standout performers from Xavier's win over Dayton. Everyone contributed, and there wasn't much separation among the regular contributors, as six players scored in double figures.

Bluiett and Reynolds were named to the Advocare Invitational's All-Tournament Team. Both were excellent on Sunday evening, and help set the tone for the thrashing that the Musketeers gave their ex-conference rivals.

Reynolds only played 15 minutes due to foul trouble and the Musketeers' lead reaching as high as 33 in the second half, but he played an important role with 11 points, five rebounds and a steal. He scored the Musketeers' first four points of the game on a rip-and-go move against the slower Steve McElvene, and a putback dunk after rebounding a miss by Davis.

Bluiett finished with 12 points (5-11 FG, 2-7 3PT), five rebounds and two assists. He and Davis hit back-to-back threes near the 16-minute mark to give X a 12-6 lead at the first media timeout. His smooth step-back jumper with 12:18 to play pushed X's lead to 16-9 just before the second media timeout of the half. He played the entire tournament with a confidence on offense that the rest of the team seemed to feed off of, but he wasn't selfish in hunting his own shots once the team got rolling.

Dayton point guard Scoochie Smith had a solid game with 13 points (3-4 FG, 1-1 3PT), seven rebounds and three assists, but Sumner negated any advantage that would have given the Flyers by out-dueling the veteran. The redshirt freshman finished with a team-high 14 points (5-8, 2-3 3PT) to go with three rebounds, three assists and three turnovers in 24 minutes. He scored 10 of those points in the first half and had a personal 8-3 run near the eight-minute mark that included a pair of threes to put the Musketeers up 10, 31-21. His athleticism was a problem at times for Dayton's defense, and he was able to bail Xavier out of a few possessions late in the shot clock by beating his man on straight-line drives.

Davis had 12 points (5-8 FG, 2-4 3PT), six rebounds, three assists and a steal. He also fulfilled his role as emotional team leader, and kept the team playing hard late into the second half despite the big lead. A specific play at the 13:32 mark of the second half illustrated this point perfectly, as he initially made a careless pass that should have been a turnover, but when the Dayton player fumbled the ball on the ground Davis immediately dove back on it and fired cross court to Abell for an open three. That extended the Musketeers' lead to 24, 63-39.

Macura (3-6 FG, 1-3 3PT) and Abell (4-8 FG, 1-2 3PT) each added 11 points to round out the scorers in double figures for Xavier. Both contributed to Dayton's defense looking overwhelmed by the Musketeers' abundance of weapons.

James Farr was dominant on the glass again, scoring eight points (4-7 FG) and hauling in seven boards with three blocked shots in 17 minutes.

Sean O'Mara also gave Xavier good minutes off the bench. And not just mop up duty minutes; important minutes. He came off the bench and grabbed three defensive rebounds, had a steal, and finished off a nice move in the post in five minutes of action in the first half after Farr and Reynolds each picked up their second foul. For the game, O'Mara finished with nine points (3-5 FG) and five boards in 13 minutes.

A quick glance at the boxscores from Xavier's wins over Alabama and USC in the first two rounds of the tournament reveals that those games followed similar scripts - the Musketeers shared the ball, multiple guys contributed, and they were the tougher team.

That last part might be the most important trait this year's Xavier team shares with the 2007-08 team.

The current Musketeers have much different personalities from that of the '07-08 team, but both groups were super competitive and played with tons of confidence. Over the last few years when Xavier has lost early games away from the Cintas Center, the Musketeers seemed to wilt under pressure. Offensive droughts looked incurable, and consistently getting stops on defense felt impossible for those teams early in the year.

This team has thrived in those types of games so far. The Musketeers attack the paint and stay aggressive on offense, they defend hard for full possessions on defense, and they're bullies on the glass at both ends.

This Xavier team is talented and is ahead of schedule from where everybody expected it to be at this point after having to change its style of play from the end of last year to this year. Already holding wins on the road at Michigan and at a neutral site against Alabama, USC and Dayton, gives the Musketeers the potential for a top-notch resume come March.

Like Coach Kelsey said, it's too early to call. This team still has a ton to prove before it'll be held in the same esteem that Xavier fans hold that great team from 2007-08. But, he's not crazy for bringing up the notion.

Way too early 2 say but from what I just watched this could be the best Xavier team ever. That's heavy but geez louise that was impressive.
