Colorado Springs, Colo. - Xavier University Head Basketball Coach Chris Mack been appointed as a court coach for the 2016 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team training camp. The coaching selections were made by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee, chaired by Jim Boeheim (Syracuse). Boeheim also selected Jerry Nichols from Southwest Tennessee Community College and Joe Niland from the University of Mobile.
“In Chris Mack, Jerry Nichols and Joe Niland, the committee has selected three successful coaches who will be tremendous assets during the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team training camp,” Boeheim said. “The challenge of preparing a team for international competition falls heavily on the coaching staffs, which is why USA Basketball is committed to engaging with the best coaches in the country.”
Training camp for the 2016 USA U18 National Team will feature 26 athletes and will take place from June 14-18 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Training camp will resume July 11-15 in Houston, and the final 12-member team will be announced before the team departs for Valdivia, Chile. The USA U18 National Team will play in the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship from July 19-23.
Mack, Xavier's first-ever National Coach of the Year, had his contract extended recently through the 2021-22 season. Mack was selected as the 2015-16 USBWA Henry Iba National Coach of the Year as well as the CBS Sports and Basketball Times magazine National Coach of the Year. In addition, Mack earned BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year by CBS Sports and Bleacher Report.
"I'm very honored, as one can imagine, to represent USA Basketball this summer,” Mack said. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with such talented coaches and players during my time in Colorado Springs. I'm very appreciative of the trust USA Basketball has placed in me. I'm looking forward to the experience. “
Mack led Xavier to a 28-6 overall record this past season, finishing 14-4 and in second place behind eventual National Champion Villanova in the BIG EAST Conference. Xavier's 28 wins tied for the second-most wins in school history and the 14 BIG EAST wins are a school record as is the final Associated Press Poll ranking of No. 9.
Mack, 46, has recorded a 162-77 (.678) mark over seven years and stands second on Xavier's all-time wins list. He has led Xavier to the NCAA Tournament in six of his seven seasons at the helm, including the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 2010, 2012 and 2015. He is the only Xavier head coach that has led XU to three Sweet 16s and he has more NCAA Tournament wins (7) than any XU head coach.
Mack, Nichols and Niland will assist the USA U18 coaching staff comprised of head coach Shaka Smart (Texas) as well as assistant coaches Kevin Ollie (Connecticut) and Mark Turgeon (Maryland).
