Daily Dr. Roto - Friday, September 5

In order to really take your Fantasy Football game to the next level, you must stay on top of injuries all the way down to the last minute every Sunday. This is when teams announce whether guys will play or not. Dr. Roto walks you through some of the marquee players injured here in Week 1.

Week 1 Injury Report

The NFL classifies injuries in the following fashion: probable (75-percent chance to play, questionable (50-percent chance to play) & doubtful (25-percent to play)

Regardless of the team’s injury designation it is critically important that YOU, the Fantasy owner, watch the inactive list on Sunday at about Noon.

Week 1 Injuries of Note

QB Cam Newton (rib) is probable with a hairline fracture in his rib. Expect Newton to play. This injury might prohibit Newton from taking off and running but he still should be effective from the pocket.

RB Steven Jackson (hamstring) has taken it easy over the preseason. Barring a last minute setback, he will start against the Saints. It seems strange to think that Jackson will get 20+ carries this week. Look for Freeman and Smith to get some touches as well.

RB Arian Foster (hamstring) sat out for the entire preseason but will be the starter in Week 1. Jonathan Grimes is nothing more than a third down back who will come in only on obvious passing plays. Foster should be good for the bulk of the carries.

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster

RB Bernard Pierce (concussion) has received medical clearance and will be the starter. Pierce will be the bell cow back this week with Ray Rice suspended.

WR Sammy Watkins (ribs) has missed some practice time this week and is considered questionable. Expect him to suit up for his first regular season game. Watkins has missed out on good chemistry time with QB E.J. Manuel, so I would be careful starting him this week.

WR Wes Welker (suspension) will be OUT for the next four games. Start WR Emmanuel Sanders if you have him.

Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker

WR Kenny Stills (quad) is questionable with a strained quad muscle. Stills is a speed receiver so it would not be surprising to see him miss the game this week. Check Sunday morning for the latest news on him. If Stills does not suit up, bump up rookie Brandin Cooks on your rankings. Cooks will be hard to stop this week, regardless if Stills plays.

TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) is expected to play in Week 1. There is talk that he might be on a snap count, but the Patriots are generally tight lipped about injuries. As of now, Fantasy owners should assume that Gronk will play, but keep close watch prior to kickoff to be sure.
