Layne hurt his knee in Week 16 of last season and finished the campaign on IR. He'll have a chance to compete for a depth role in the defensive backfield during training camp.

Jose Siri NYM CF
Mets' Jose Siri: Still not running at 100 percent
44m agoSiri (tibia) doesn't appear to be close to returning from the injured list, Tim Britton of the Athletic reports.
The outfielder still hasn't worked up to 100 percent in his running progression, and until he does his return timeline will remain murky. Siri hasn't played since April 12 after fracturing his left tibia, but he did begin taking live batting practice last week.

Erik Swanson TOR RP
Blue Jays' Erik Swanson: Picks up win in season debut
1h agoSwanson (1-0) recorded the win Sunday over the A's, giving up one run on one hit in one inning of relief. He struck out one.
Activated from the 60-day IL earlier in the day after recovering from a forearm issue, Swanson entered the game in the top of the eighth inning with the Blue Jays down 3-2 and had trouble finding the plate. In addition to allowing a leadoff single to Willie MacIver, he uncorked a wild pitch and plunked Denzel Clarke with a 91.1 mph fastball before finally escaping the frame with minimal damage. Swanson then found himself in line for the win when Addison Barger launched a go-ahead, three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. The right-hander could eventually work his way into a high-leverage role, but Sunday's performance suggests Swanson still has some rust to shake off first.

Frankie Montas NYM RP
Mets' Frankie Montas: Covers three frames in rehab start
1h agoMontas (lat) struck out three batters and allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks over three innings Thursday for High-A Brooklyn in his second rehab start.
Montas, who is working his way back from a high-grade lat strain, tossed 49 pitches (28 strikes) Thursday and is expected to require at least two more appearances in the minors before becoming an option for the New York rotation around the middle of June. The 32-year-old is scheduled to make his third minor-league appearance Tuesday, this time moving up to Triple-A Syracuse after his prior two outings came with Brooklyn.

With top prospect Jac Caglianone receiving a call-up to the big leagues and likely to take on an everyday role in the corner outfield, Blanco became an expandable piece for the Royals. Since being activated May 16 following a stint on the injured list, Blanco appeared in just six of the Royals' ensuing 15 games and went 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI while going 1-for-3 in stolen-base attempts.

Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Slugs homer No. 10
1h agoOzuna went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Red Sox.
The veteran DH accounted for Atlanta's only run of the day when he took Garrett Crochet deep in the first inning. It was Ozuna's 10th homer of the season, while the multi-hit performance was his fifth in the last 13 games -- a blistering stretch in which he's slashing .362/.483/.617 with four long balls, seven RBI and nine runs.
-

Royals' Jac Caglianone: Added to major-league roster
1h agoThe Royals selected Caglianone's contract from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.

The 22-year-old earned a call-up after slashing .322/.389/.593 with 15 home runs and two stolen bases over 50 games between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Omaha. Caglianone is expected to see most of his playing time in right field for the Royals, but he can also handle first base.

Jarace Walker IND PF
Pacers' Jarace Walker: Out at least two games
2h agoWalker (ankle) will miss the first two games of the NBA Finals, Dustin Dopirak of the Indianapolis Star reports.
During his weekly radio interview with James Boyd and Kevin Bowen on 107.5 FM The Fan, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said Walker will be out "a while." The NBA Finals are very spread out, however, which gives Walker more time for treatment and healing. He's averaged 9.8 minutes in the postseason, appearing in 12 out of 16 games. With Walker sidelined, a handful of those minutes could go to Obi Toppin.

He never logged more than four minutes with New York. However, the 24-year-old forward averaged 12.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals across 29.9 minutes per game in 37 G League appearances with the Maine Celtics. The rookie second-rounder averaged 11.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals across 27.8 minutes per game in 13 appearances with Westchester. The two-way player is set to become a restricted free agent this offseason.

P.J. Tucker NY PF
Knicks' P.J. Tucker: Limited playing time in 2024-25
23h agoTucker finished the 2024-25 campaign with averages of 3.0 points and 2.7 rebounds across 19.3 minutes per game in three regular-season outings (one start).
Tucker signed two 10-day contracts with New York in March before landing a one-year deal with the club in April. The veteran forward made only one postseason appearance, and the Knicks hold a team option on his contract for next season. Should the 40-year-old choose to continue playing, he'll likely serve as sparsely deployed veteran depth considering his age.
-

36m agoJohansson agreed to terms on a one-year, $800,000 contract with Minnesota on Monday.
Johansson was set to hit free agency this offseason but instead will be sticking around for another year. The 34-year-old forward will be taking a significant pay cut compared to his $2 million cap hit last year, despite having put together a third straight 30-point campaign. Johansson figures to slot into a middle-six role for Minnesota next year and could push up higher depending on injuries.

Connor Brown EDM C
Oilers' Connor Brown: Should be good for Game 1
22h agoBrown (undisclosed) will be ready for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Panthers on Wednesday, Tony Brar of Oilers TV reports.
Brown missed the final two games of the Western Conference Finals against the Stars, but the extra time off between series has done him well since he should be ready to go for the series opener against the Panthers. The Oilers will be happy to have him back considering Brown has produced five goals and three assists in 14 postseason games. His addition to the lineup means another forward like Jeff Skinner may be pushed out of the lineup again.
