Calvin Austin III PIT WR
Steelers' Calvin Austin: Leading candidate for WR2 spot
1d agoSteelers receivers coach Zach Azzani recently said "that [WR2] spot is all [Austin's] right now," Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
The Steelers reworked their wideout room over the offseason, jettisoning George Pickens in a trade while also letting Van Jefferson walk in free agency. DK Metcalf was acquired from Seattle, and Pittsburgh also signed 33-year-old Robert Woods. However, it sounds like Austin has a significant lead on Woods and second-year WR Roman Wilson for the starting gig opposite Metcalf. Austin had a breakout 2024 campaign, posting a 36-548-4 receiving line on 58 targets while playing in all 17 regular-season games, averaging a robust 15.2 yards per catch. Following the Steelers' acquisition of Jonnu Smith, this looks like an offense that is going to feature two tight ends in Smith and Pat Freiermuth, as opposed to three wide receivers, so the winner of the WR2 job stands to see far more playing time than the Steelers' third and fourth receivers.

Devontez Walker BAL WR
Ravens' Devontez Walker: Leading candidate for WR4 job
1d agoWalker was Baltimore's most consistent wide receiver during spring practices and appears to be the frontrunner for the WR4 job, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
Walker was a fourth-round pick in the 2024 Draft and saw just three targets across nine regular-season appearances as a rookie, catching one pass for a 21-yard touchdown. Walker played just 57 offensive snaps across those nine contests and was sixth amongst Baltimore's wideouts in targets. The Ravens signed DeAndre Hopkins in the offseason and kept Tylan Wallace with a one-year deal, but Hensley believes Walker is positioned to leap Wallace for the WR4 gig despite Wallace posting an 11-193-1 line on 12 targets and 275 snaps last regular season.

P.J. Locke DEN SAF
Broncos' P.J. Locke: Recovering from surgery
2d agoLocke underwent spinal fusion surgery during the offseason and is still recovering, he recently disclosed on his YouTube channel.
Locke played through the back injury during the 2024 season and managed to play 982 total snaps over 15 regular-season games despite dealing with considerable pain. His ability to return to the field was in question, but Locke said that his pain levels are minimal and he hopes to be cleared for training camp.

Darren Waller MIA TE
Dolphins' Darren Waller: Out of retirement, dealt to Miami
3d agoWaller is coming out of retirement and was acquired by the Dolphins in a trade with the Giants on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The two teams are swapping late-round picks, with the Giants acquiring a conditional sixth-rounder in 2026 and Miami also getting a 2027 seventh-rounder. Waller will sign an adjusted, incentive-laden deal to facilitate the trade to Miami, according to Pelissero. Waller turns 33 years old in September and retired ahead of training camp last summer. However, he recently informed the Giants of his desire to return to football, but only if it could be in Miami. With Jonnu Smith traded by the Dolphins to the Steelers on Monday, Miami had a massive hole at tight end. Waller is getting up there in age and hasn't been particularly effective or healthy since 2020 with the Raiders. It's still a worthwhile flier for a Dolphins offense that was lacking established pass catchers behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Pat Freiermuth PIT TE
Steelers' Pat Freiermuth: Joined by Jonnu Smith
4d agoFreiermuth will play alongside fellow tight end Jonnu Smith after the Steelers traded for Smith on Monday, Steelers Now reports.
Coming off an 88-catch breakout campaign while playing in all 17 regular-season games, Smith represents a threat to Freiermuth's playing time in 11 personnel even if they can work together symbiotically in multi-TE formations. Freiermuth is entering the first season of a four-year, $48.4 million contract extension, while Smith just signed a one-year, $12 million extension through 2026. Both tight ends will find it difficult to approach their 2024 volume, competing against each other (and WR DK Metcalf) for targets from a 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers in Arthur Smith's run-first offense.
-
Jalen Ramsey MIA CB
Steelers' Jalen Ramsey: Traded to Pittsburgh
4d agoThe Dolphins are trading Ramsey to the Steelers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith are headed to Pittsburgh in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, with Day 3 picks going in both directions. The 2-for-1 trade allows Miami to shed salary without totally punting, while Pittsburgh now has standout strengths at cornerback and tight end. Ramsey may end up in an IDP-friendly role as a slot guardian and/or safety, considering the Steelers seemingly have a solid pair of boundary corners in Joey Porter and Darius Slay. They also have slot corner Beanie Bishop returning, so there's no shortage of options for nickel packages.

Tom Murphy SF C
Giants' Tom Murphy: Still no timetable for return
3m agoManager Bob Melvin said Thursday that Murphy (back) is still rehabbing and there's no clear timetable for his return, per MLB.com.
Murphy was placed on the 60-day injured list May 26 due to a mid-back disc herniation and isn't expected to return before the All-Star break. The veteran catcher will continue his recovery after being diagnosed with the injury near the end of February. The 34-year-old signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the club in December 2023 but missed the majority of the 2024 campaign due to a sprained MCL in his left knee, slashing .118/.211/.235 with three runs scored, two RBI and one home run across just 38 plate appearances.

Alex Call WAS RF
Nationals' Alex Call: Another three-hit effort
3m agoCall went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI in Thursday's win over the Tigers.
The 30-year-old outfielder is thriving in a short-side platoon role, banging out three hits in each of his last two starts. Call is slashing .294/.389/.405 on the season in 59 games with two homers, one steal, 20 RBI and 27 runs, but his workload seems unlikely to increase any time soon -- Daylen Lile has a 10-game hitting streak going on the strong side of the platoon with Call, and Dylan Crews (oblique) is expected back from the IL before the end of July.

Scott Effross NYY RP
Yankees' Scott Effross: Promoted Friday
9m agoThe Yankees recalled Effross from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
The right-hander has spent the past couple weeks with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but will rejoin the Yankees ahead of Friday's series opener versus the Mets. Effross delivered a scoreless frame in his lone appearance of the season for the Yankees on June 17.

Heliot Ramos SF LF
Giants' Heliot Ramos: Multi-hit effort in victory
11m agoRamos went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a double during Thursday's 7-2 win over the Diamondbacks.
Ramos put the Giants on the board in the first inning, knocking a double into left field and driving in a run. The 25-year-old outfielder added a single to left in the third, bringing in the Giants' fourth run. Ramos has recorded two multi-hit efforts over his last 10 games, slashing .211/.268/.289 with three doubles, three RBI and a 2:12 BB:K across 41 plate appearances.
-
Brandon Nimmo NYM LF
Mets' Brandon Nimmo: Slugs 17th homer
11m agoNimmo went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Brewers.
The 32-year-old outfielder went yard for the second straight game when he launched a Jose Quintana sinker into the right-field seats in the second inning. Nimmo has been locked in over the last month, slashing .316/.363/.579 through his last 24 games with seven of his 17 homers on the season, along with five steals, 12 runs and 16 RBI.

Jordan Wicks CHC RP
Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Back in majors
13m agoThe Cubs recalled Wicks from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
The left-hander will take the roster spot of Jameson Taillon, who landed on the injured list Friday due to a calf strain. Wicks is a candidate to step into Chicago's rotation with Taillon out, though veteran Chris Flexen is the favorite to fill in as a starter, per Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com.

Moe Wagner ORL C
Magic's Moritz Wagner: Returning to Orlando
3h agoWagner (knee) and the Magic agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal Friday, ESPN's Shams Charania reports.
Wagner is still on the mend after tearing the ACL in his left knee in December. It's not a surprise to see the Magic bring him back, however, as he was having a career-best season prior to the injury -- he posted averages of 12.9 points on 56.2 percent shooting with 4.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.8 steals over 18.8 minutes across 30 regular-season games. When he gets the green light to return, Wagner figures to carve out a decent role with the second unit.

Jabari Walker POR PF
76ers' Jabari Walker: Signs two-way deal with Philly
16h agoWalker agreed to a two-way contract with the 76ers on Thursday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.
After the Trail Blazers declined to extend Walker a qualifying offer last week, Walker became a free agent and will move on to a new destination after three seasons in Portland. The 2022 second-round pick appeared in 60 games for the Trail Blazers in 2024-25, averaging 5.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 0.6 steals, 0.6 assists and 0.5 three-pointers in 12.5 minutes per contest. The 6-foot-7, 237-pound Walker is capable of playing both frontcourt spots, and after shooting below 30 percent from beyond the arc in his first two seasons in the league, he made major strides in 2024-25 by converting at a career-best 38.9 percent from downtown. Despite the improvement he showed last season, Walker's playing-time outlook won't necessarily improve in Philadelphia, where he could struggle to carve out minutes behind Joel Embiid (knee), Adem Bona, Justin Edwards (ribs), Trendon Watford and Johni Broome.

Spencer Jones DEN SF
Nuggets' Spencer Jones: Inks two-way deal with Denver
16h agoJones agreed to a two-way deal with the Nuggets on Thursday, Keith Smith of Spotrac.com reports.
Jones played 20 games during his rookie season with the Nuggets. The Stanford product averaged 1.3 points across 6.3 minutes per game during his appearances on the NBA level.

Jaxson Hayes LAL C
Lakers' Jaxson Hayes: Re-signs with LAL
18h agoHayes agreed to a one-year contract with the Lakers on Thursday, Dan Woike of The Athletic reports.
Hayes will return to Los Angeles for a third straight season. The veteran center will now share the frontcourt with Deandre Ayton (calf), who signed with the team on Wednesday. In 56 games last season, Hayes averaged 6.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game while shooting a career-high 72.2 percent from the field.
-
Trey Alexander DEN SG
Pelicans' Trey Alexander: Signs two-way deal with New Orleans
18h agoAlexander agreed to a two-way contract with the Pelicans on Thursday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports.
Alexander spent the 2024-25 campaign with the Nuggets, playing in 24 regular-season games. He averaged 1.3 points across 4.9 minutes per game.
-
Bradley Beal PHO SG
Suns' Bradley Beal: Phoenix negotiating buyout
19h agoThe Suns are negotiating a possible buyout with Beal, Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic reports.
Beal has two years and $110 million left on his contract, but the Suns are open to ending that deal, and that move would make the veteran guard a free agent. Beal should generate heavy interest if he were to hit the open market, as he'd be free to sign any team he chooses -- and for any salary. Beal was limited to only 53 regular-season appearances (38 starts) in 2024-25, averaging 17.0 points, 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. That was his worst scoring output since the 2014-15 campaign.
-
Alex Barre-Boulet MON C
Avalanche's Alex Barre-Boulet: Pens one-year deal
16m agoBarre-Boulet signed a one-year, two-way contract with Colorado on Friday.
Barre-Boulet played two games with Montreal at the start of the 2024-25 campaign, picking up three hits and a minor penalty. The 28-year-old was then placed on waivers and spent the rest of the regular season with AHL Laval, where he managed 22 goals and 63 points in 64 appearances. Expect Barre-Boulet to spend most of the 2025-26 campaign in the minors, barring a slew of injuries up front.
-
Madison Bowey NYR D
Madison Bowey: Headed to Germany
2h agoBowey inked a one-year contract with Augsburger of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga on Friday, Tony Androckitis of Inside AHL Hockey reports.
Bowey played last season with AHL Cleveland, picking up three goals and 12 assists in 60 regular-season contests. He had a professional tryout during training camp in 2024 with the Rangers, but he was released. The 30-year-old has played 158 games at the NHL level in his career, scoring five times while adding 35 assists.
-
Christian Fischer CLB RW
Christian Fischer: Announces retirement
3h agoFischer announced his retirement from the NHL on Friday, Max Bultman of The Athletic reports.
Fischer played 45 regular-season games with the Red Wings this season before he was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets. The 28-year-old played only once for Columbus as he was a healthy scratch for 20 of the final 21 contests during the regular season. Fischer finishes his career with 62 goals and 75 assists across 523 regular-season appearances for Arizona, Detroit and Columbus.

Anthony Beauvillier WAS LW
Capitals' Anthony Beauvillier: Back in DC
17h agoBeauvillier signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Capitals on Thursday.
The Capitals missed out on making a big splash in free agency, and it looks like they pivoted to bringing back Beauvillier. In 2024-25, the winger had 25 points over 81 regular-season appearances between the Capitals and the Penguins, which was a rebound from his 17-point effort the year before. The 28-year-old should slot back into a bottom-six role for the Capitals, though he could move up the lineup if younger players struggle.
-
Mason Shaw WPG C
Jets' Mason Shaw: Snags one-year deal
20h agoShaw signed a one-year, two-way contract with Winnipeg on Thursday.
Shaw should have a decent shot at securing a spot on the Opening Night roster, but he's far from a lock considering the two-way nature of his deal. If he does earn a spot, it figures to be in a bottom-six role that is unlikely to come with much, if any, power-play ice time.
-
Nikolaj Ehlers CAR LW
Hurricanes' Nikolaj Ehlers: Lands six-year deal
22h agoEhlers agreed to terms on a six-year, $51 million contract with Carolina on Thursday.
Ehlers is coming off back-to-back 20-plus goal campaigns, including the 2024-25 season in which he still managed to rack up 24 goals despite playing in just 69 regular-season contests. With his new club, the 29-year-old winger should immediately slot into a top-six role in addition to joining the No. 1 power-play unit. Ehlers' presence in the lineup should allow Taylor Hall to drop down to the third line, where he may be better suited at this point in his career.
