This Week's Kobalt 400
Yahoo: Top 30 Drivers
Yahoo / Fantasy Live / Fox: Quick Picks
On the heels of a solid debut for the low-downforce package at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the Sprint Cup Series will head to Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend for the start of the early-season West Coast swing.
The 1.5-mile tri-oval has a similar layout to Atlanta, so there while there is a legitimate chance that many of the drivers that had success last weekend could also run well Sunday, it is a little too soon to start identifying trends. Don't forget that Sunday's Kobalt 400 is only the third race of the year, so it isn't a bad idea to stick with the big names when setting your fantasy lineups, especially in the Yahoo game.
After all, Jimmie Johnson went to victory lane last weekend, and he was followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick. All six of those drivers are household names, and while you don't want to burn up all of your starts from the top drivers too soon, using up a few starts from the heavy hitters early in the year can be a lot more beneficial than trying to guess which mid-tier drivers are going to perform well.
1. KEVIN HARVICK, #4 BUSCH BEER/JIMMY JOHNS, STEWART-HAAS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
A late restart cost him a potential win last weekend at Atlanta, but Harvick still dominate much of the race. Expect more of the same Sunday at Las Vegas, where led a race-high 142 laps on his way to a win last season.
2. JIMMIE JOHNSON, #48 LOWE'S/KOBALT TOOLS, HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS [YAHOO CLASS A]
Fresh off a win last weekend, don't be surprised if Johnson goes back to victory lane Sunday. After all, his four wins at Las Vegas are the most in the series, and he has finished sixth or better in three of his last four starts at the track, leading more than 30 laps in all four races during the stretch.
3. MATT KENSETH, #20 DOLLLAR GENERAL/DEWALT, JOE GIBBS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
The pit road penalty debacle knocked Kenseth out of contention last Sunday at Atlanta, but he had one of the cars to beat. Given his track record at Las Vegas, he should be back in the mix for the win this weekend. His 11.4 average finish here is tops in the series, and he has made three trips to victory lane.
4. BRAD KESELOWSKI, #2 MILLER LITE, TEAM PENSKE [YAHOO CLASS A]
He has been the model of consistency at the 1.5-mile tracks since the start of last season, and Keselowski has been on a roll at Las Vegas. He has 3.7 average finish in his last three starts at the track, winning the 2014 event.
5. DALE EARNHARDT, JR., #88 NATIONAL GUARD/DIET MOUNTAIN DEW, HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS [YAHOO CLASS A]
Junior is the only driver that has finished in the top 10 in each of the last five races at Las Vegas. His 6.2 average finish and 192 driver points scored during the stretch lead all drivers, and he has finished second and fourth in his last two starts here.
