J.K. Dobbins: Lines up visit with Chargers
    2h ago

Dobbins (Achilles) is visiting Los Angeles on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Dobbins, who was recently medically cleared for football activities, is coming off a left Achilles tear after previously missing all of 2021 and about half of the 2022 season due to a torn ACL and proceeding issues. That medical history undercuts otherwise impressive career numbers for Dobbins, who has averaged 5.8 yards per carry and scored 13 touchdowns since entering the NFL in 2020 as a second-round pick by the Ravens, but only suited up for 24 games in that span. Reuniting with offensive coordinator Greg Roman could make the most sense as a landing spot for Dobbins, but it's possible he doesn't garner more interest than a potential prove-it deal. The Chargers and Roman signed Gus Edwards,a former Baltimore backfield mate of Dobbins, early in free agency.

Texans' Derek Stingley: Slow start, strong finish
    2h ago

Stingley recorded 39 tackles, 13 passes defensed and five interceptions over 11 regular-season games in 2023.

Stingley, a second-year cornerback and 2022 first-round draft pick, suffered a Week 3 hamstring that created issues for the defense early on, but upon his return Week 10, Stingley made an impact. He had interceptions in three straight games, including the Week 13 win over the Broncos. Stingley will return as Houston's top cornerback in 2024.

    DeAndre Houston-Carson: Enters free agency
    2h ago

Houston-Carson recorded 41 tackles, five passes defensed, two interceptions and one fumble recovery over 13 regular-season games in 2023.

Houston-Carson started the season in Baltimore then finished up in Houston, where he played a career-high 447 snaps on defense. Injuries on the back end led to Houston-Carson playing a big role for the Texans, including two pivotal plays in a Week 10 win over the Bengals. He entered unrestricted free agency during the offseason.

    Texans' Jimmie Ward: Injury-marred 2023
    2h ago

Ward (quadriceps) recorded 50 tackles, three passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble over 10 games in 2023.

Ward, a team captain, was beset by injuries all season long. He missed time due to hip, hamstring and shoulder injuries before a quadricep ended his season in December. In between the setbacks, Ward played well, and his one interception was an end-zone pick that sealed a win over Denver. Houston went 6-4 in games he played and could use his stabilizing presence on the back end. Ward turns 33 in July and will be entering his 11th season.

Texans' Henry To'oTo'o: Contributes in rookie season
    2h ago

To'oTo'o recorded 61 tackles, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over 15 regular-season games in 2023.

To'oTo'o, a fifth-round draft pick out of Alabama, started from Week 2 to Week 7 and played in both of Houston's playoff games during his rookie season. The Texans lost two linebackers to free agency -- Blake Cashman and Denzel Perryman -- which leaves To'oTo'o as a projected starter for 2024. However, Houston is expected to address the position during the offseason.

  • Nate Sudfeld DET QB
Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Remains in Detroit
    17h ago

Sudfeld (knee) re-signed with the Lions on Wednesday.

Sudfeld missed all of last year after suffering a torn ACL in a preseason game against the Panthers. The 30-year-old operated as the team's backup quarterback to Jared Goff in 2022, and was competing with Teddy Bridgewater for that role last season before his injury. If he can make the Lions roster in 2024, he'll likely be the No. 3 option with Hendon Hooker behind Goff.

Twins' Josh Staumont: Hits IL with calf strain
    3m ago

The Twins placed Staumont on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a left calf strain.

Staumont was on track to make the Twins' Opening Day roster, but his bid was derailed when he slipped in the bullpen earlier this week and apparently suffered the calf strain in the process. The transaction is retroactive to Monday, so Staumont will be eligible to return from the IL as soon as April 9.

Reds' Will Benson: Batting second on Opening Day
    3m ago

Benson is starting in center field and batting second for the Reds in Thursday's opener against the Nationals.

Manager David Bell had indicated previously that Elly De La Cruz could be in the two hole at the beginning of the season, but it will be Benson there while De La Cruz is down in the six spot. Bell's lineups could be fluid, but if Benson sticks in the second spot against righties it would be a nice boost to his fantasy outlook.

  • Nick Martini CIN LF
Reds' Nick Martini: Starting in season opener
    7m ago

Martini will serve as the Reds' designated hitter and No. 8 batter in Thursday's season opener versus the Nationals.

At least against right-handed pitching, Martini looks like he'll get the first opportunity to fill the lineup spot that was opened up by Tj Friedl (wrist) and Matt McLain (shoulder) beginning the season the injured list and by Noelvi Martin serving an 80-game suspension to begin the season. Though the Reds' logjam in the infield and outfield is alleviated to some degree by those absent players, the lefty-hitting Martini will still likely need to find some early success against right-handed pitching to ensure he sticks in a strong-side platoon role. Over 361 career plate appearances versus righties, Martini has slashed .288/.380/.449 with eight home runs.

Rays' Wander Franco: Placed on administrative leave
    9m ago

Franco was placed on administrative leave Thursday by Major League Baseball under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The placement removes him from the Rays' 40-man roster and is effective through June 1. The stay could end sooner than that if there are any developments in Franco's investigation or could be extended if there are none. Because he is on administrative leave and not the restricted list, Franco will be paid his $2 million salary.

Twins' Anthony DeSclafani: Placed on 60-day IL
    22m ago

DeSclafani (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list.

DeSclafani entered spring training as a front-runner for a back-end spot in the Minnesota rotation, but he didn't make any Grapefruit League appearances while the Twins eased him back after his 2023 campaign was cut short by a right elbow flexor strain. He then had a setback and is expected to miss much if not the entire 2024 season. However, there's been no official word on his injury after a visit with a specialist. Louie Varland is set to begin the season as the No. 5 starter as a result.

Knicks' Bojan Bogdanovic: Efficient night from second unit
    8m ago

Bogdanovic recorded 18 points (7-11 FG, 4-5 3Pt), one rebound and two assists in 16 minutes off the bench during Wednesday's 145-101 win over Toronto.

The 34-year-old forward didn't need to do too much in the rout, but he took advantage of his opportunities. Bogdanovic is still capable of supplying some instant offense from the second unit, but he's had an inconsistent March, scoring in double digits only five times in 12 games and shooting just 34.0 percent (17-for-50) from three-point range.

Knicks' Donte DiVincenzo: Drains five threes Wednesday

DiVincenzo accumulated 16 points (5-12 FG, 5-12 3Pt, 1-2 FT), five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals over 33 minutes during Wednesday's 145-101 victory over the Raptors.

It was another big night from beyond the arc for DiVincenzo, who has buried multiple three-pointers in 30 straight games. Through 12 contests in March, the 27-year-old guard has averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 boards, 4.4 threes, 3.5 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.8 blocks while attempting nearly 12 shots a game (11.9) from three-point range.

Knicks' Precious Achiuwa: Double-double against former club
    15m ago

Achiuwa recorded 19 points (8-13 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-3 FT), 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal over 27 minutes off the bench during Wednesday's 145-101 win over the Raptors.

It was Achiuwa's ninth double-double of the season, seven of which have come since he was traded from Toronto to New York as part of the OG Anunoby (elbow) trade. Achiuwa was actually the biggest part of that deal on the court Wednesday, as Immanuel Quickley (conditioning) and RJ Barrett (conditioning) also remained sidelined for the Raptors. Achiuwa has come off the bench in eight straight games even with Anunoby unavailable for the last five, and his production has been erratic over that stretch, although he has scored in double digits twice while pulling down double-digit boards twice as well. In those eight games, the 24-year-old big has averaged 7.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 blocks in 21.4 minutes a contest.

Marcus Morris: Deal with Cleveland expires

Morris became a free agent Thursday after his 10-day contract with the Cavaliers expired, Keith Smith of Spotrac.com reports.

Cleveland has the ability to re-sign Morris to a second 10-day deal, though it's unclear if the team has any desire to keep him around. Over the course of his first 10-day pact, Morris appeared in five games and averaged 7.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.4 three-pointers and 1.2 assists in 18.2 minutes per contest, but he fell out of the rotation in Wednesday's 118-111 loss to the Hornets while Max Strus (knee) made his return from a 12-game absence.

Lakers' Gabe Vincent: Eyeing Sunday return
    19m ago

Vincent (knee) is set to join the Lakers for the start of their four-game road trip that begins Friday in Indiana and is expected to make his return to action Sunday in Brooklyn, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Though Vincent looks like he'll remain out Friday, barring a setback leading up to Sunday's morning shootaround, he'll be available to play later that day against the Nets for what would be his first appearance since Dec. 20. After signing a three-year, $33 million deal with the Lakers over the summer, Vincent has thus far been limited to just five appearances after his season debut was delayed while he recovered from a left knee effusion. The knee issue then cropped up again in December, prompting Vincent to undergo arthroscopic surgery to provide a longer-term fix for the issue. Vincent will likely claim a spot in the rotation once healthy, though he could be in store for only a light role behind backcourt starters D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves.

Kleven's promotion doesn't bode well for the availability of Thomas Chabot (lower body) against the Blackhawks on Thursday. Even with Kleven joining the team, he is far from a lock for a spot in the lineup, as Travis Hamonic figures to have the inside track if called upon. Still, Kleven does offer some offensive upside with 17 points in 45 minor-league contests this season.
