J.K. Dobbins: Lines up visit with Chargers
    36m ago

Dobbins (Achilles) is visiting Los Angeles on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Dobbins, who was recently medically cleared for football activities, is coming off a left Achilles tear after previously missing all of 2021 and about half of the 2022 season due to a torn ACL and proceeding issues. That medical history undercuts otherwise impressive career numbers for Dobbins, who has averaged 5.8 yards per carry and scored 13 touchdowns since entering the NFL in 2020 as a second-round pick by the Ravens, but only suited up for 24 games in that span. Reuniting with offensive coordinator Greg Roman could make the most sense as a landing spot for Dobbins, but it's possible he doesn't garner more interest than a potential prove-it deal. The Chargers and Roman signed Gus Edwards,a former Baltimore backfield mate of Dobbins, early in free agency.

Texans' Derek Stingley: Slow start, strong finish
    44m ago

Stingley recorded 39 tackles, 13 passes defensed and five interceptions over 11 regular-season games in 2023.

Stingley, a second-year cornerback and 2022 first-round draft pick, suffered a Week 3 hamstring that created issues for the defense early on, but upon his return Week 10, Stingley made an impact. He had interceptions in three straight games, including the Week 13 win over the Broncos. Stingley will return as Houston's top cornerback in 2024.

    DeAndre Houston-Carson: Enters free agency
    1h ago

Houston-Carson recorded 41 tackles, five passes defensed, two interceptions and one fumble recovery over 13 regular-season games in 2023.

Houston-Carson started the season in Baltimore then finished up in Houston, where he played a career-high 447 snaps on defense. Injuries on the back end led to Houston-Carson playing a big role for the Texans, including two pivotal plays in a Week 10 win over the Bengals. He entered unrestricted free agency during the offseason.

  • Jimmie Ward HOU SAF
    Texans' Jimmie Ward: Injury-marred 2023
    1h ago

Ward (quadriceps) recorded 50 tackles, three passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble over 10 games in 2023.

Ward, a team captain, was beset by injuries all season long. He missed time due to hip, hamstring and shoulder injuries before a quadricep ended his season in December. In between the setbacks, Ward played well, and his one interception was an end-zone pick that sealed a win over Denver. Houston went 6-4 in games he played and could use his stabilizing presence on the back end. Ward turns 33 in July and will be entering his 11th season.

Texans' Henry To'oTo'o: Contributes in rookie season
    1h ago

To'oTo'o recorded 61 tackles, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over 15 regular-season games in 2023.

To'oTo'o, a fifth-round draft pick out of Alabama, started from Week 2 to Week 7 and played in both of Houston's playoff games during his rookie season. The Texans lost two linebackers to free agency -- Blake Cashman and Denzel Perryman -- which leaves To'oTo'o as a projected starter for 2024. However, Houston is expected to address the position during the offseason.

Lions' Nate Sudfeld: Remains in Detroit
    16h ago

Sudfeld (knee) re-signed with the Lions on Wednesday.

Sudfeld missed all of last year after suffering a torn ACL in a preseason game against the Panthers. The 30-year-old operated as the team's backup quarterback to Jared Goff in 2022, and was competing with Teddy Bridgewater for that role last season before his injury. If he can make the Lions roster in 2024, he'll likely be the No. 3 option with Hendon Hooker behind Goff.

Marlins' Anthony Maldonado: Dispatched to Triple-A
    8m ago

The Marlins optioned Maldonado to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday.

After posting a 1.76 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 71:21 K:BB in 46 innings at Jacksonville in 2023, Maldonado was shielded from the Rule 5 Draft over the winter and added to the Marlins' 40-man roster. He appeared to enter spring training with a legitimate chance at winning a spot on the Marlins' Opening Day roster, but despite limiting batters to a .158 average and permitting just one run while striking out eight over six innings in the Grapefruit League, Maldonado wasn't able to break camp with the club. The right-hander will likely begin the season as Jacksonville's closer and might not have to wait long before he gets his first call to the big leagues.

The Athletics optioned Jackson to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Jackson missed out on a bullpen spot after allowing seven runs (six earned) over 8.1 innings this spring. The 29-year-old could still eventually fill a leverage role in an Oakland bullpen, which is unsettled.

Marlins' Calvin Faucher: Denied Opening Day roster spot
    11m ago

The Marlins optioned Faucher to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday.

Faucher had been projected to be a part of the Marlins' Opening Day bullpen, but Miami's acquisition Wednesday of right-hander Burch Smith likely left Faucher on the outside looking in for a spot on the 26-man active roster. The 28-year-old right-hander should handle a key late-inning role with New Orleans and will look to impress at Triple-A with the hope of making his Miami debut at some point this season.

The Rangers optioned Anderson to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday.

Anderson lost out to Yerry Rodriguez and Jacob Latz for the final two available spots in the Rangers' Opening Day bullpen. The 26-year-old right-hander previously made 26 relief appearances for Texas as a rookie in 2023, logging a 5.05 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 30:14 K:BB across 35.2 innings.

The Astros optioned Julks to Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday.

Angels' Miguel Sano: Added to 40-man roster
    24m ago

The Angels selected Sano's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Just as manager Ron Washington had indicated Tuesday would be the case, Sano was added to the Angels' 40-man roster and 26-man active roster ahead of Thursday's season opener versus the Orioles. Sano, who has four seasons of 25-plus home runs on his resume, didn't play at all during the 2023 season but joined the Halos for spring training and popped four long balls over 54 at-bats in Cactus League play. However, Sano also struck out 20 times, and his boom-or-bust tendencies will likely result in him being limited to a bench role unless injuries open up an opportunity for regular playing time.

Lakers' Colin Castleton: Plays in garbage time in return
    38m ago

Castleton (wrist) played the final 1:19 of Wednesday's 136-124 win over the Grizzlies and didn't record any statistics during his time on the court.

Castleton, one of the Lakers' three two-way players, was cleared to return to action Wednesday after he hadn't appeared at the NBA or G League level since Feb. 10 while recovering from a fractured right wrist. Even with Anthony Davis (knee) sidelined for the second leg of a back-to-back set, the rookie big man out of Florida remained out of head coach Darvin Ham's rotation, as the Lakers relied mostly on small-ball lineups when fill-in starting center Jaxson Hayes (31 minutes) was off the court.

Pistons' Jalen Duren: Claims double-double in return
    1h ago

Duren (back) tallied 11 points (4-6 FG, 3-4 FT), 11 rebounds and four assists across 25 minutes Wednesday in the Pistons' 106-91 loss to the Timberwolves.

Duren had missed the Pistons' previous three games with back spasms, but he reclaimed his spot in the starting five and came away with his 40th double-double of the season. He handled a near-even split of the playing time at center with James Wiseman, who logged 23 minutes in the loss. Head coach Monty Williams could opt to keep a rough timeshare between the two in place over the remaining weeks of the season in an effort to preserve Duren's minutes while also continuing to reward Wiseman for his improved play since the All-Star break.

Nuggets' Michael Porter: Plays through illness for 18 points
    5h ago

Porter recorded 18 points (7-16 FG, 2-7 3Pt, 2-2 FT), eight rebounds and two steals over 33 minutes during Wednesday's 104-97 loss to Phoenix.

Porter drew the start despite battling an unspecified illness but was fairly productive in the loss. Porter has plodded along with pedestrian scoring numbers over the past three games due to lower-than-expected shot volume, but his 16 attempts Wednesday is a move in the right direction. Porter can soar well above 20 points with enough opportunity, but he sometimes lacks the necessary aggression to make those opportunities happen on his own.

Nuggets' Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: Solid total in loss
    5h ago

Caldwell-Pope racked up 13 points (5-9 FG, 3-6 3Pt), six rebounds, six assists, one block and two steals over 36 minutes during Wednesday's 104-97 loss to the Suns.

Denver's backcourt continues to deal with Jamal Murray's (ankle) absence, and although Caldwell-Pope can be a volatile fantasy prospect, he's delivered solid assist and rebound totals alongside one of his best scoring results over the past two weeks. Short of putting Murray and Reggie Jackson o the floor at the same time, the Nuggets lack playoff experience in the backcourt, so they'll beed to see more production from Caldwell-Pope down the stretch.

Nuggets' Nikola Jokic: Double-doubles with 10 assists
    5h ago

Jokic totaled 22 points (9-16 FG, 1-5 3Pt, 3-3 FT), nine rebounds, 10 assists, one block and two steals across 42 minutes during Wednesday's 104-97 loss to the Suns.

Jokic got the extra assist to hit another double-double, a milestone he missed twice over the past 10 games. The MVP candidate is dealing with multiple injuries at the moment, but the team cant shut him down yet due to an ongoing battle for first seed in the Western Conference. If the Nuggets create sone space between Minnesota and Oklahoma City in the coming week, we may see Jokic's usage draw down to get rest for the playoffs.

Suns' Bradley Beal: Poor result in victory

Beal registered 10 points (3-11 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, seven assists, one block and one steal in 37 minutes during Wednesday's 104-97 victory over the Nuggets.

Beal has played through a finger injury but his resent results suggest some difficulty with his shot. The veteran has converted only 31.8 percent of his 22 shot attempts over the past two games, and the Suns need much more from Beal if they hope to stay out of the play-in bracket. With only 19 total points over the past two games, Beal will try to turn things around against the Thunder this Friday.

Senators' Tyler Kleven: Called up from minors

Kleven was elevated from AHL Belleville on Thursday.

Kleven's promotion doesn't bode well for the availability of Thomas Chabot (lower body) against the Blackhawks on Thursday. Even with Kleven joining the team, he is far from a lock for a spot in the lineup, as Travis Hamonic figures to have the inside track if called upon. Still, Kleven does offer some offensive upside with 17 points in 45 minor-league contests this season.

The 25-year-old Katchouk now has six goals and 11 points across 47 games between Ottawa and Chicago this season. While he provides a physical presence, Katchouk isn't likely to offer consistent production offensively in a fourth-line role.

Sabres' Devon Levi: Sharp in relief

Levi stopped 31 of 32 shots after relieving Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in a 6-2 loss to the Senators on Wednesday.

Levi entered the game after Luukkonen allowed four goals in the first 8:49 of the first period. After allowing a goal to Brady Tkachuk late in the frame, Levi would proceed to blank the Senators over the final two periods. Despite the 22-year-old netminder's performance, the Sabres couldn't overcome the early 5-0 deficit, saddling Luukkonen with the loss. While Levi's seen limited action, he's been sharp recently, sporting a .943 save percentage over his last three appearances. Overall, he's 9-8-2 with an .898 save percentage and 3.16 GAA this season.
