18m agoThe NFL reinstated Cephus from suspension Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The 2020 fifth-round pick was one of five players reinstated Thursday, out of the seven suspended indefinitely last offseason for violations of the league's gambling policy. The Lions released Cephus shortly thereafter but may now have some interest in bringing him back to compete for a depth role. He showed some promise his first two seasons while totaling 553 receiving yards and four TDs in 18 games (five starts), with a foot injury then limiting him to four appearances and 15 yards in 2022. He recently turned 26 years old and should get a tryout somewhere even if Detroit isn't interested in a reunion.

2h agoBernard, who missed the Bills' Jan. 21 playoff loss to the Chiefs due to an ankle injury, feels very good health-wise at this stage of the offseason, Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo reports.
Prior to suffering his injury in the Bills' wild-card win over the Steelers on Jan. 15, Bernard racked up 143 tackles, 6.5 sacks and three interceptions in 17 regular-season contests. Now that his ankle has had time to heal up, the 2022 third-rounder is set to reprise his role as Buffalo's starting middle linebacker, which puts the 24-year-old in a position to remain a viable lineup option in IDP formats this coming season.

The agreement slightly reduces the base value of Anderson's deal down from $3.35 million, with the move in line to create $990,000 in salary cap space for New England. In his second season with the Patriots, the 28-year-old -- who finished the 2023 campaign on IR -- figures to compete for a swing tackle role along the team's offensive line, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.

Deshaun Watson CLE QBBrowns' Deshaun Watson: Making 40-yard throws
4h agoBrowns GM Andrew Berry said Thursday that Watson (shoulder) has been making throws of up to 40 yards, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
While not quite willing to guarantee that Watson will be ready for the regular-season opener, Berry did confirm that's the expectation and said the Browns are "pretty optimistic" about the QB's rehab process so far. Watson spoke with reporters Tuesday, mentioning that the team medical staff favors a cautious approach that would see him wait until training camp before returning to full practice participation. The 28-year-old thus figures to be limited during OTAs, giving free-agent additions Jameis Winston and Tyler Huntley more chances to throw to the team's top receivers. The Browns traded for WR Jerry Jeudy in March and still have WRs Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore as well as TE David Njoku. There's also a strong chance of improved blocking this season, after 2023 saw the Browns lose their top three OTs to season-ending knee injuries. Watson is the biggest variable though, perhaps more so because of his disappointing 2022-23 performance than the ongoing rehab from Nov. 21 surgery to repair a displaced glenoid fracture in his right shoulder.

Nick Chubb CLE RBBrowns' Nick Chubb: Running on land again
5h agoChubb (knee) resumed running on land within the last week, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
Chubb took his rehab to the next level shortly after agreeing last Thursday to a contract alteration that converted a large portion of his scheduled $11.75 million base salary into incentives. He's entering the final season of a three-year extension and still faces a long path to complete his rehab from surgeries in September and November to address ACL, MCL and meniscus injuries in his left knee. It's the same knee in which he suffered a major injury Oct. 2015 -- his sophomore season at Georgia -- and he later had an MCL sprain in the knee Oct. 2020. The Browns hope the 28-year-old is ready for Week 1, but they're also preparing for the possibility of missed time, having added RBs D'Onta Foreman and Nyheim Hines (knee) to a roster that still has Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong.

18h agoBrown agreed to a contract with the Dolphins on Wednesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Brown appeared in 60 career games as a special-teams ace during his first four seasons with the Giants, tallying 24 tackles over that span. The 26-year-old played exclusively on special teams in 16 games during the 2023 campaign, so he'll more than likely fulfill a similar role for Miami in 2024.

Smith was selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, but the Yankees claiming Taylor Trammell off waivers from the Dodgers will leave Smith without a 40-man roster spot once again. The 27-year-old never appeared at the plate during his brief stint in New York, and a .516 OPS throughout his MLB career makes it likely he passes through waivers unclaimed.

1h agoNevin went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a double and a run in a win over the Cardinals on Wednesday.
Nevin drew the start in right field and delivered once again, pushing his average to .303 across 37 plate appearances. Nevin has now reached safely in five consecutive games, but Wednesday's two-bagger was his first extra-base hit of the campaign.

2h agoMyers was optioned to Triple-A Nashville by the Brewers on Thursday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Myers was with the big club for just one day and did not make an appearance. The Brewers will announce a corresponding move prior to their series opener Friday in St. Louis.

Bobby Witt KC SSRoyals' Bobby Witt: Notches fourth steal
2h agoWitt went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in a 4-2 win over the White Sox in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Witt also went 1-for-4 in the nightcap. He's hit safely in five of the last seven games, batting .333 (10-for-30) in that span. The shortstop is off to another strong start in 2024 with a .321/.369/.628 slash line, four home runs, four steals, eight RBI, 18 runs scored, six doubles and three triples across 84 plate appearances. He's also striking out at a 22.6 percent clip, a bit higher than the 17.4 percent mark he had last year, but that's a fair trade-off for more contact.

Renfroe went 0-for-3 with one RBI in the nightcap as well. The veteran outfielder is still holding onto a starting role in right field, but he's struggling at the plate in 2024. Renfroe is batting .176 with two homers, eight RBI, six runs scored and two doubles over 56 plate appearances. Nelson Velazquez has occasionally moved from designated hitter to right when Renfroe rests, and Adam Frazier could be an option there as well once Michael Massey (back) is activated from the injured list.

2h agoPerez (groin) went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in a 4-2 win over the White Sox in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Perez returned from a Grade 1 left groin strain Wednesday and delivered the key hit in the Royals' matinee win. He also went 0-for-2 with two walks in the nightcap while serving as the designated hitter. He appears good to go moving forward after the injury scare. The veteran catcher is off to a hot start with five homers, 17 RBI, nine runs scored and two doubles while slashing .324/.370/.574 over 18 contests this season.

10m agoLeonard (knee) recently received an injection to aid in his recovery, and there is "cautious optimism" that he'll be ready for Sunday's Game 1 against Dallas, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Thursday.
Leonard was unavailable for the Clippers' final eight games of the regular season due to right knee inflammation. He returned to practice Monday but hasn't yet been cleared for 5-on-5 drills. The Clippers will likely wait to see how his knee responds to his recent treatment before determining his status for the start of postseason play Sunday, but even if he isn't cleared for Game 1, it wouldn't be surprising to see him return sometime during the Clippers' first-round series.

Phillips continues to deal with a right mid foot sprain and will be unavailable as the Bulls attempt to secure the No. 8 seed Friday. Even if the Bulls advance to the first round of the playoffs, it seems unlikely that Phillips will be able to return.

Drummond returned to action for Wednesday's Play-In Game against Atlanta after missing the final three games of the regular season due to a sprained left ankle. He tallied four points, four rebounds, three blocks and a steal in 11 minutes against the Hawks, and it's possible he'll be available once again Friday.

The Bulls are facing a win-or-go-home scenario Friday against the Heat, and the potential loss of Caruso would be massive due to his ability on defense and contributions across the board. However, he's dealing with a "significant" ankle sprain, so his status against Miami is in doubt, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. Javonte Green, Torrey Craig and Dalen Terry would be the main candidates to take on more minutes if Caruso ends up being ruled out.

Dosunmu sat out the final four games of the regular season due to a right quadriceps contusion but returned to action to begin the postseason Wednesday against Atlanta. He tallied 19 points, three assists, two blocks and a rebound in 41 minutes in his return to action, and he should see plenty of playing time if he's cleared to play once again, especially if Alex Caruso (ankle) is unavailable.

5h agoBatum provided 20 points (7-12 FG, 6-10 3Pt), five rebounds and one block in 28 minutes during Wednesday's 105-104 Play-In Game victory over the Heat.
It was widely known that Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey were going to carry the Sixers in this matchup against the Heat, but the truth is that Philadelphia wouldn't have gotten the win hadn't it been for Batum's impressive effort off the bench. The 20-point output was a season-high mark for the veteran, and even though his role is not going to change drastically in the first-round matchup against New York, he should continue to see decent minutes on a regular basis. Perhaps surprisingly, he went scoreless in the four times he faced the Knicks during the regular season.

Bolduc recorded five goals and nine points in 25 appearances with the Blues this season. He has also provided eight goals and 23 points in 48 games with Springfield. The Blues' campaign is over, so this is an opportunity for Bolduc to get in some extra work before the summer.

Ludvig was limited to a mere 33 games this year, notching three goals on 24 shots, two assists and 72 hits. Despite struggling to get into the lineup at the end of the campaign, the towering defenseman should continue to develop and should be a near-lock for the 23-man roster coming out of training camp in the fall.

Joseph managed just three points through his first 34 appearances, which included several stints in the press box as a healthy scratch before finding his game in mid-March while Ryan Graves (concussion) was sidelined. The 24-year-old Joseph's inconsistency could create problems when the two sides try to finalize a new contract for the restricted free agent this offseason.

Soderblom has a 5-22-1 record, 3.88 GAA and .880 save percentage in 31 appearances this season. He faced LA on March 15 and allowed four goals on 14 shots in just 14:19 of ice time en route to a 5-0 loss, so this is an opportunity for him to get some revenge. The Kings rank 18th offensively with 3.07 goals per contest this campaign.

Jesse Puljujarvi PIT RWPenguins' Jesse Puljujarvi: Underwhelms offensively
21m agoPuljujarvi notched just three goals and one assist in 22 games for the Penguins this season.
Puljujarvi didn't sign with the Pens until February, so perhaps a full training camp will help set him up to produce more offensively next season. Having said that, the 25-year-old winger is unlikely to challenge for a top-six role, so his opportunities are likely to be limited.

Nikita Zaitsev CHI DBlackhawks' Nikita Zaitsev: Questionable Thursday
25m agoZaitsev is questionable for Thursday's tilt against the Kings because of an illness, Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Zaitsev has two goals, seven points, 69 hits and 70 blocks in 38 outings this season. Connor Murphy (undisclosed) has already been ruled out for the contest, so if Zaitsev doesn't play either, then Chicago might dress just five defensemen versus LA.
