Goody's Fast Relief 500
Yahoo: Top 30 Drivers
Yahoo / Fox / NASCAR: Quick Picks
After a typically chaotic race at Talladega that saw Brian Scott finish second and Michael McDowell crack the top 20, the Sprint Cup Series heads to Martinsville Speedway for the final short track event of the 2016 season.
Sunday's Goody's Fast Relief 500 is also the first race of the Round of Eight in the Chase, and over the next three races, the four drivers who will compete for this year's championship will be decided.
In the meantime, fantasy owners have to prepare for NASCAR smallest track, and Martinsville's flat corners and paperclip shape create an exciting and challenging brand of racing. Passing can be exceptionally difficult, and the track can wear out brakes and tempers in a hurry. Even pit road can be dangerous.
On the plus side, the unique nature of Martinsville allows certain drivers to really dominate at the track, and you should be able to build a strong lineup. Perhaps more importantly at this point in the season, there are several middle tier drivers who excel at the track. If you have burned up most of your starts from the top drivers in each group, you should still be able to build a quality lineup.
1. JIMMIE JOHNSON, #48 LOWE'S/KOBALT TOOLS, HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS [YAHOO CLASS A]
Johnson has found his mojo during the Chase, which bodes well for a big performance at one of his best tracks. He is an eight-time winner here, and in 29 starts, he has 23 top 10s, including 18 top five finishes. Johnson has also led more than 2,700 laps here.
2. KYLE BUSCH, #18 MARS BRANDS/INTERSTATE BATTERIES, JOE GIBBS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
He clobbered the field in the spring race, leading 352 laps on his way to his first Martinsville win. Busch has now reeled off seven straight top 15s at the track, notching four top five finishes. His blend of reliability and upside makes him an ideal A-List play.
3. JOEY LOGANO, #22 SHELL-PENNZOIL, TEAM PENSKE [YAHOO CLASS A]
Logano led more than 200 laps at Martinsville last fall before Matt Kenseth stuffed him in the fence. He has three top five finishes in his last five starts here, leading more than 20 laps in all five races. He has also won the last three poles at Martinsville, so at the very least, you should have him on the bench in the Yahoo game to score some qualifying bonus points.
4. KEVIN HARVICK, #4 BUSCH BEER/JIMMY JOHNS, STEWART-HAAS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
Harvick hasn't always had the finishes he deserves at Martinsville, but he has still managed four finishes of eighth or better in his last six starts here. He has also led a combined 264 laps in the last three races at the track, so he should still be one of the best bets for a top five.
5. MATT KENSETH, #20 DOLLLAR GENERAL/DEWALT, JOE GIBBS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
Joining Joe Gibbs Racing has brought out the best in Kenseth at Martinsville. He has six top 15s in seven starts here with JGR, leading 392 total laps and finishing sixth or better four times. He has gone from a fantasy afterthought here to one of the top plays.
