AAA Texas 500
Yahoo: Top 30 Drivers
Yahoo / Fox / NASCAR: Quick Picks
The third round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup continues this weekend with a trip to Texas Motor Speedway for Sunday's AAA Texas 500. The 1.5-mile oval is typically among the fastest tracks on the schedule, and when Tony Stewart set the current track record in the fall of 2014, he grabbed the pole with a lap of 200.111 mph.
For fantasy owners, another trip to a 1.5-mile oval means another week of leaning on the big names. I have talked all year about how the top drivers from the top teams tend to dominate at tracks with the 1.5-mile layout, and this year has been no exception.
Six of the top eight scorers in the eight races at 1.5-mile tracks are still alive in the Chase, and the two exceptions are Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski, who could easily be in the Round of Eight if not for engine failures.
This late in the season, you are probably running low on starts for the top drivers in the Yahoo game. However, this is not the week to try to branch out with a bunch of sleepers. Stick with the stars if at all possible.
1. JIMMIE JOHNSON, #48 LOWE'S/KOBALT TOOLS, HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS [YAHOO CLASS A]
He has an 8.3 average finish at Texas, cracking the top 10 in 20 of his 26 starts at the track. More importantly, Johnson is a six-time winner here, winning the fall race in each of the last four years and winning three of the last four races at the track overall.
2. KYLE BUSCH, #18 MARS BRANDS/INTERSTATE BATTERIES, JOE GIBBS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
His 5.0 average finish over the last 10 races at Texas is the best in the series, and Busch hasn't finished outside the top 15 during the stretch. He has also finished fourth or better in six of his last seven starts here, winning the spring race earlier this year.
3. KEVIN HARVICK, #4 BUSCH BEER/JIMMY JOHNS, STEWART-HAAS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
Harvick has been his typically consistent self at Texas, logging seven top 10s in the last 10 races at the track. He has finished outside the top 15 just once during that same span, and he has finished third or better in three of his last four starts here.
4. MARTIN TRUEX, JR., #78 FURNITURE ROW, FURNITURE ROW RACING [YAHOO CLASS B]
He has been the driver to beat at 1.5-mile tracks in 2016, and he led a race-high 141 laps at Texas in the spring before a bad pit road call cost him the win. He still managed his third straight top 10 at the track, and his 10.3 average finish over the last 10 races here ranks third in the series.
5. JOEY LOGANO, #22 SHELL-PENNZOIL, TEAM PENSKE [YAHOO CLASS A]
Logano has turned into one of the top fantasy options at Texas in recent years, finishing 12th or better in seven of the last eight races here. More impressively, he has five top five finishes in the last seven races at the track, including a win in 2014 and a third-place run in the spring.
