Camping World 500
Yahoo: Top 30 Drivers
Yahoo / Fox / NASCAR: Quick Picks
The West Coast swing continues for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this weekend, but after back-to-back races at 1.5-mile tracks, it is time to change things up. Phoenix International Racewy will host Sunday's Camping World 500, and the flat, 1.0-mile track is a far cry from the "cookie-cutter" ovals the series has visited the last two weeks.
In addition to the lack of banking, Phoenix (PIR) has two very different sets of turns. The combination of the two variables makes passing difficult, and I expect pit strategy to play a much bigger role than it has so far this season.
As with any track with more a unique layout certain drivers excel at Phoenix while others tend to struggle a bit, even some bigger names. With that in mind, Sunday's race is an opportunity for fantasy owners to use some different drivers and get creative with their Yahoo lineups, and it couldn't come at a better time.
Don't forget that part of the challenge of the Yahoo format is budgeting your starts over the course of the season, and you have to pick and choose when you use the top options in each tier in order to maximize their production. When you have a chance to get strong finishes out of middle-tier and sleeper drivers, you need to try to take it.
1. KEVIN HARVICK, #4 JIMMY JOHNS, STEWART-HAAS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
His career numbers at Phoenix are incredible, and in 28 starts at the track, he has piled up eight wins and a 10.0 average finish. He has basically been unstoppable at the track since joining Stewart-Haas Racing, compiling four wins and a 1.7 average finish in six starts. He will be the popular A-List play and rightfully so.
2. JOEY LOGANO, #22 SHELL-PENNZOIL, TEAM PENSKE [YAHOO CLASS A]
He picked up the win at Phoenix last fall, putting the exclamation point on what has been a stellar stretch at the track. Logano had cracked the Top 10 in six of his last seven starts here, logging three Top 5s in his last six starts.
3. KYLE BUSCH, #18 M&M'S, JOE GIBBS RACING [YAHOO CLASS A]
Busch has always been consistent at Phoenix, logging 15 Top 10s in 23 starts, and he has taken his performance to another level recently. He has clicked off three straight finishes of fourth or better at PIR, notching a second-place run here last fall.
4. BRAD KESELOWSKI, #2 MILLER LITE, TEAM PENSKE [YAHOO CLASS A]
He has been the model of consistency at Phoenix, and over the last 10 races at the track, his 9.1 average finish is the second best in the series. During the same stretch, Keselowski only has one finish outside the Top 15, and he has finished sixth or better six times.
5. KURT BUSCH, #41 MONSTER ENERGY/HAAS AUTOMATION, STEWART-HAAS RACING [YAHOO CLASS B]
Maybe it has something to do with having access to Kevin Harvick's setup, but Busch has been on a tear at Phoenix since joining Stewart-Haas Racing. He has finished seventh or better in five straight starts here, finishing sixth and fifth in two starts last season. He is the top B-List play this weekend.
