Losses

OFFENSE
  • WR Kamar Aiken

  • RB Terrance West
  • WR Steve Smith
DEFENSE
  • CB Jerraud Powers
  • CB Shareece Wright
  • S Lardarius Webb
  • DE Elvis Dumervil
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Ravens tried to upgrade their secondary in 2017. S Tony Jefferson should be big plus at safety while Brandon Carr will at least be a league average option at cornerback. Hopefully, RB Danny Woodhead has one more year of value as a pass-catching back.

Cincinnati Bengals

Additions

OFFENSE
  • T Andre Smith
DEFENSE
  • LB Kevin Minter
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • RB Rex Burkhead
  • T Andrew Whitworth
DEFENSE
  • LB Karlos Dansby
  • DE Margus Hunt
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

Both Karlos Dansby and Andrew Whitworth had long successful careers in the NFL. At age 35, it was time move on. Whitworth remains a productive player despite being on the downside of his career.

Cleveland Browns

Additions

OFFENSE
  • WR Kenny Britt
  • WR James Wright
  • G Kevin Zeitler
  • C J.C. Tretter

OFFENSE
  • QB Josh McCown
  • WR Terrelle Pryor
  • WR Andrew Hawkins
  • G Austin Pasztor
DEFENSE
  • CB Tramon Williams
  • DT Stephen Paea
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Browns didn’t lose any player of value in the offseason, which makes sense considering how bad they’ve been. G Austin Pasztor could be the top player lost if he signs with another team.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Additions

OFFENSE
  • RB Knile Davis
DEFENSE
  • CB Coty Sensabaugh
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • RB DeAngelo Williams
  • WR Markus Wheaton
DEFENSE
  • LB Jarvis Jones
  • LB Lawrence Timmons
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

CB Ross Cockwell is a restricted free agent. He played just above the league average in 2016 and he should be an important player for the Steelers to re-sign. Lawrence Timmons won’t be a great loss after struggling last season. Jarvis Jones held his own as a rotational guy off the bench. DeAngelo Williams has been great as backup to Le’Veon Bell over the last two seasons. Williams may re-sign if doesn’t retire.

  • S Sergio Brown
  • S James Ihedigbo
  • LB Zach Brown
  • DT Leger Douzable
  • DT Corbin Bryant
SPECIAL TEAMS

Analysis

Overall, Buffalo lost more than they gained in the secondary. They improve at fullback while flipping kickers. The Bills need to improve behind Sammy Watkins at the WR position. The new coaching staff removed a lot of the weaker links on the roster.

Miami Dolphins

Additions

OFFENSE
  • QB David Fales
  • TE Anthony Fasano
  • G Ted Larsen
DEFENSE
  • S T.J. McDonald
  • S Nate Allen
  • LB Lawrence Timmons

  • S Bacarri Rambo
  • S Michael Thomas
  • LB Spencer Paysinger
  • LB Donald Butler
  • DE Mario Williams
  • DE Ed Jones
  • DT Earl Mitchell
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

No major upgrades or downgrades. The only player who offered an edge in 2016 was CB Isa Abdul-Quddus.

New England Patriots

Additions

OFFENSE
  • RB Rex Burkhead
DEFENSE
  • CB Stephon Gilmore
  • DE Lawrence Guy
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • RB LeGarrette Blount
  • WR Michael Floyd
DEFENSE
  • CB Logan Ryan
  • LB Barkevious Mingo
  • DE Jabaal Sheard
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

Both CB Logan Ryan and Jabaal Sheard were assets on New England’s defense in 2016. Stephon Gilmore is an upgrade at CB, but the Patriots need to work something out with restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler. There is a chance that LeGarrette Blount returns if New England doesn’t add another back in free agency or the draft.

New York Jets

Additions

OFFENSE
  • QB Josh McCown
  • WR Quinton Patton
  • G Jonotthan Harrison
  • T Kelvin Beachum
DEFENSE
  • CB Morris Claiborne
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • K Chandler Catanzaro

Losses

OFFENSE
  • QB Geno Smith
  • RB C.J. Spiller
  • WR Brandon Marshall
DEFENSE
  • CB Darrelle Revis
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

CB Darrelle Revis isn’t the player he once was. WR Brandon Marshall wanted to get out of town with the Jets having weak QB play and a fading offense. I don’t get the signing of QB Josh McCown. New York needs to start building for the future, which means developing a young QB.

AFC South

Houston Texans

Additions

OFFENSE
  • None
DEFENSE
  • None
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • QB Brock Osweiler
DEFENSE
  • CB A.J. Bouye
  • LB John Simon
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

There are no new impactful free agent signings by the Texans. Houston will miss CB A.J. Bouye, who played at a high level in 2016 as a full-time starter. Linebacker John Simon was an asset as a rotational player before missing five games late in the year with a chest injury. The Texans moved on from Brock Osweiler with the thought of signing Tony Romo or even trading to get Jimmy Garoppolo from the Patriots. Houston has talent on defense, but they can’t win without significant improvement from the quarterback position.

Indianapolis Colts

Additions

OFFENSE
  • WR Kamar Aiken
  • TE Brandon Williams
  • G Brian Schwenke
DEFENSE
  • LB Sean Spence
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • P Jeff Locke

Losses

OFFENSE
  • TE Dwayne Allen
  • G Jonotthan Harrison
DEFENSE
  • CB Patrick Robinson
  • S Mike Adams
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

There was minor movement by the Colts this offseason. They gave up on TE Dwayne Allen while Kamar Aiken has a chance to improve Andrew Luck’s wide receiver depth.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Additions

OFFENSE
  • TE Mychal Rivera
  • G Tyler Shatley
DEFENSE
  • CB A.J. Bouye
  • S Barry Church
  • DE Calais Campbell
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • TE Julius Thomas
  • T Kelvin Beachum
DEFENSE
  • CB Davon House
  • CB Prince Amukamara
  • S John Cyprien
  • DE Chris Smith
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Jaguars have young talent on defense and they added three players who graded about the league average at their positions in 2016. Calais Campbell is 31, but he will be a nice upgrade in talent and experience on the defensive line. Bouye was one of the better CBs in the league last year. Barry Church played very well for the Cowboys. He looks like a parallel move after the loss of Johnathan Cyprien. I don’t think they’ll miss Thomas at TE especially since he never developed as expected.

Tennessee Titans

Additions

OFFENSE
  • G Tim Lelito
DEFENSE
  • CB Logan Ryan
  • S John Cyprien
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • WR Kendell Wright
  • TE Anthony Fasano
  • G Brian Schwenke
DEFENSE
  • CB Antwon Blake
  • LB Sean Spence
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Titans lost only a few of players of consequence this offseason. Logan Ryan played above the league average at cornerback for New England in 2016 and Cyprien was one of the better safeties in the league last year. The secondary should improve so long as some chemistry is developed.

AFC West

Denver Broncos

Additions

OFFENSE

  • G Ron Leary
  • T Menelik Watson
DEFENSE
  • DT Domata Peko
  • DT Zach Kerr
  • DE Kasim Edebali
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • T Russell Okung
DEFENSE
  • LB DeMarcus Ware
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

Denver lost a nice offensive lineman in Russell Okung and DE DeMarcus Ware retired. Plus, they won’t get that QB upgrade they hoped for in the offseason. Ron Leary played well for the Cowboys last year, but it may have been a result of the supporting cast on the offensive line plus the upside talent in Ezekiel Elliott. The Broncos added some rotational players to add depth to their defensive line.

Kansas City Chiefs

Additions

OFFENSE
  • RB C.J. Spiller
  • TE Gavin Escobar
DEFENSE
  • S Marqueston Huff
  • DT Bennie Logan
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • QB Nick Foles
  • RB Jamaal Charles
  • RB Knile Davis
DEFENSE
  • DT Dontari Poe
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The loss of Jamaal Charles will be tough to replace even with his injury risk and his aging skill set. Dontari Poe had starting snaps while delivering below par results. All of the other moves have minimal upside.

Oakland Raiders

Additions

OFFENSE
  • QB E.J. Manuel
  • WR Cordarrelle Patterson
  • TE Jared Cook
  • T Marshall Newhouse
DEFENSE
  • LB Jelani Jenkins
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • RB Latavius Murray
  • WR Andre Holmes
  • TE Mychal Rivera
  • T Menelik Watson
DEFENSE
  • CB D.J. Hayden
  • S Nate Allen
  • LB Malcolm Smith
  • DT Stacy McGee
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

Oakland moved on from Latavius Murray, but they have enough talent on the roster at RB to play well at that position. Both Jared Cook and Cordarrelle Patterson should work well as complementary players. They didn’t lose one player of value to free agency.

Los Angeles Chargers

Additions

OFFENSE
  • RB Kenjon Barner
  • T Russell Okung
DEFENSE

Losses

OFFENSE
  • RB Danny Woodhead
  • T King Dunlap
  • G D.J. Fluker
DEFENSE
  • CB Brandon Flower
  • CB Robert McClain
SPECIAL TEAMS

Analysis

The best move in the offseason for the Chargers was adding T Russell Okung. The Chargers need to protect Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon looked like a beast when healthy in 2016. The rest of the moves will go down as addition by subtraction.
