NFL Free Agency Recap: NFC

A recap of every NFC team's additions & losses via free agency.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys

Additions

OFFENSE
  • T Byron Bell
DEFENSE
  • CB Nolan Carroll
  • DT Stephen Paea
  • DE Damontre Moore
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • TE Gavin Escobar
  • T Ronald Leary
DEFENSE
  • CB Brandon Carr
  • CB Morris Claiborne
  • S Barry Church
  • DT Terrell McCain
  • DE Jack Crawford
  • DE Ryan Davis
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

Ronald Leary played well in 2016, but his opportunity came from an injury to La’el Collins. The Cowboys lost multiple players in the secondary who played well last year. The addition of CB Nolan Carroll looks like more of a band aid than permanent solution. Dallas will need plenty of help on the defensive side of the ball in the 2017 NFL Draft.

New York Giants

Additions

OFFENSE
  • QB Geno Smith
  • WR Brandon Marshall
  • TE Rhett Ellison
  • G D.J. Fluker
DEFENSE
  • CB Antwon Blake
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • WR Victor Cruz
DEFENSE
  • CB Coty Sensabaugh
  • DT Johnathan Hankins
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

If Brandon Marshall can regain his previous form for one season, it will help the Giants’ offense tremendously. Marshall will command attention, thus creating more space for the dynamic Odell Beckham. G D.J. Fluker didn’t play well in 2016 for the Chargers, but he did start. At the very, Fluker adds depth to a less than mediocre offensive line in New York. All other free agent moves look to be minor.

Philadelphia Eagles

Additions

OFFENSE
  • QB Nick Foles
  • QB Matthew McGloin
  • WR Alshon Jeffery
  • WR Torrey Smith
  • G Chance Warmack
DEFENSE
  • CB Patrick Robinson
  • DT Timmy Jernigan
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • QB Chase Daniel
  • RB Kenjon Barner
DEFENSE
  • CB Leodis McKelvin
  • DT Bennie Logan
  • DE Conor Barwin
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Eagles didn’t lose any impactful players to free agency. WR Alshon Jeffery was a very good signing as he will give Carson Wentz a deep scoring threat on the outside. In addition, WR Torrey Smith will add big play ability after being worthless for the 49ers over the last two seasons. Both CB Patrick Robinson and DT Timmy Jernigan will add depth to the defense and are expected to start.

Washington Redskins

Additions

OFFENSE
  • WR Terrelle Pryor
  • WR Brian Quick
DEFENSE
  • CB Tharold Simon
  • S D.J. Swearinger
  • DT Stacy McGee
  • DT Terrell McClain
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • WR DeSean Jackson
  • WR Pierre Garcon
DEFENSE
  • DT Ricky Jean-Francois
  • DT Chris Baker
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

Washington lost talent at WR in the offseason. They added WR Terrelle Pryor to hopefully absorb some of the loss while WR Brian Quick is no more than deep bench depth based on his path in the NFL. The interior of the defensive line did takes a hit with Chris Baker moving to the Buccaneers. The Redskins added two players to fill the void while downgrading in talent for sure.

NFC North

Chicago Bears

Additions

OFFENSE
  • QB Mark Sanchez
  • QB Mike Glennon
  • RB Benny Cunningham
  • WR Kendall Wright
  • WR Markus Wheaton
  • TE Dion Sims
DEFENSE
  • CB Prince Amukamara
  • CB B.W. Webb
  • CB Markus Cooper
  • S Quintin Demps
  • DT John Jenkins
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • QB Matt Barkley
  • QB Brian Hoyer
  • QB Jay Cutler
  • WR Alshon Jeffery
  • G Ted Larson
DEFENSE
  • S Demontre Hurst
  • DT Cornelius Washington
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Bears turned the page on their offense in 2017. They dumped their QB crew while adding a couple low level names while also moving on from top-tier talented wideout Alshon Jeffery, a guy any organization would have a tough time replacing. Chicago did add a couple of WRs with NFL experience and limited upside. The Bears tried to improve the depth of the secondary with minimal losses to their 2016 defense.

Detroit Lions

Additions

OFFENSE
  • TE Darren Fells
  • T Ricky Wagner
  • G T.J. Lang
DEFENSE
  • CB D.J. Hayden
  • LB Nick Bellore
  • LB Paul Worrilow
  • DT Cornelius Washington
  • DT Akeem Spence
  • DT Jordan Hill
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • WR Anquan Boldin
  • WR Andrew Roberts
  • G Larry Warford
DEFENSE
  • S Rafael Bush
  • DT Tyrunn Walker
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

Detroit lost one of the better offensive lineman in G Larry Warford, but they did a nice job replacing him with G T.J. Lang. T Ricky Wagner played well in 2016 so he’ll compete for a starting job this season. All other changes appear to be minor.

Green Bay Packers

Additions

OFFENSE
  • TE Martellus Bennett
  • TE Lance Kendricks
DEFENSE
  • CB Davon House
  • DT Ricky Jean-Francois
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • RB Eddie Lacy
  • TE Jared Cook
  • C J.C. Tretter
  • G T.J. Lang
DEFENSE
  • CB Micah Hyde
  • DT Mike Pennel
  • DE Julius Peppers
  • DE Datone Jones
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Packers generally like to stay within their system for players. They did go outside the box to upgrade the TE position with Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks after Jared Cook signed with the Raiders. The out of shape Eddie Lacy found a new home in Seattle and the loss of T T.J. Lang on the offensive line could be an issue this year.

Minnesota Vikings

Additions

OFFENSE
  • RB Latavius Murray
  • T Riley Reiff
  • T Mike Remmers
DEFENSE
  • DE Datone Jones
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • RB Adrian Peterson
  • WR Cordarrelle Patterson
  • TE Rhett Ellison
  • G Brandon Fusco
  • T Matt Kalil
  • T Andre Smith
DEFENSE
  • CB Captain Munnerlyn
  • LB Chad Greenway
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Adrian Peterson era in Minnesota has ended. Latavius Murray was brought in to take over the starting RB job. This season the Vikings will need to retool their offensive line after losing several players to free agency. CB Captain Munnerlyn will be missed in the secondary.

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons

Additions

OFFENSE
  • WR Andre Roberts
  • G Hugh Thornton
DEFENSE
  • DT Dontari Poe
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • FB Patrick DiMarco
  • WR Aldrick Robinson
  • WR Eric Weems
  • G Tom Compton
DEFENSE
  • LB Paul Worrilow
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

No major adds or losses for the Falcons headed into the 2017 season. WR Taylor Gabriel is an unrestricted free agent. He played well in his role last year so the Falcons should look to resign him.

Carolina Panthers

Additions

OFFENSE
  • FB Russell Shepard
  • T Matt Kalil
DEFENSE
  • CB Captain Munnerlyn
  • S Mike Adams
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • FB Mike Tolbert
  • WR Corey Brown
  • WR Ted Ginn
  • T Mike Remmers
DEFENSE
  • CB Leonard Johnson
  • LB A.J. Klein
  • DE Kony Ealy
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

Ted Ginn did a nice job getting open for the Panthers over the last two years, but his catch rate was an issue. His speed will be missed. CB Captain Munnerlyn will improve the depth of the secondary. Carolina took a swing on T Matt Kalil. He’s a former first round pick who signed a $55.5 million contract in March.

New Orleans Saints

Additions

OFFENSE
  • QB Chase Daniel
  • WR Ted Ginn
DEFENSE
  • LB Manti Te'o
  • LB A.J. Klein
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • RB Tim Hightower
  • WR Brandin Cooks
  • G Tim Lelito
  • G Jahri Evans
DEFENSE
  • CB B.W. Webb
  • S Jairus Byrd
  • DE Kasim Edebali
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The big move in the offseason for the Saints was the trade of WR Brandin Cooks for a first and third round draft pick (New England gets a fourth-round pick back). Ted Ginn will help stretch the defense. S Jairus Byrd and G Jahri Evans are unrestricted free agents so they may resign. If New Orleans is going to improve in 2017, it will come in the draft.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Additions

OFFENSE
  • WR DeSean Jackson
DEFENSE
  • DT Chris Baker
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • K Nick Folk
  • LS Garrison Sanborn

Losses

OFFENSE
  • QB Mike Glennon
  • WR Russell Shepard
  • WR Vincent Jackson
  • T Gosder Cherilus
DEFENSE
  • CB Alterraun Verner
  • S Bradley McDougald
  • DT Akeem Spence
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

WR DeSean Jackson never lived up to expectations in Washington due to too many other receiving options plus his inability to stay healthy. He should be a great fit opposite side of WR Mike Evans if he can stay on the field. DT Chris Baker will upgrade the interior of the defensive line after playing at a high level over the last two seasons. All other moves appear to be minor.

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals

Additions

OFFENSE
  • None
DEFENSE
  • S Antoine Bethea
  • LB Karlos Dansby
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • K Phil Dawson

Losses

OFFENSE
  • TE Darren Fells
  • T Earl Watford
DEFENSE
  • CB Marcus Cooper
  • CB Tharold Simon
  • S Tony Jefferson
  • S D.J. Swearinger
  • LB Kevin Minter
  • DT Calais Campbell
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • K Chandler Catanzaro

Analysis

The Cardinals’ defense lost a ton of talent in their secondary plus one of their top defensive lineman (Calais Campbell). They flipped kickers, which looks like a parallel move.

Los Angeles Rams

Additions

OFFENSE
  • RB Russell Shepard
  • WR Robert Woods
  • T Andrew Whitworth
  • C John Sullivan
DEFENSE
  • CB Nickell Robey-Coleman
  • CB Kayvon Webster
  • DT Tyrunn Walker
  • DE Connor Barwin
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • QB Case Keenum
  • RB Benny Cunningham
  • WR Brian Quick
  • WR Kenny Britt
  • TE Lance Kendricks
  • C Tim Barnes
DEFENSE
  • S T.J. McDonald
  • DE Eugene Sims
  • DE William Hayes
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Analysis

The Rams finally dumped their boring receiving options creating a new opportunity for someone to shine. They added WR Robert Woods to compete for a starting job. He should be an upgrade. T Andrew Whitworth will start the year at age 35, but he has a long resume of success in the NFL. The only loss of value on the defense was S T.J. McDonald.

San Francisco 49ers

Additions

OFFENSE
  • QB Brian Hoyer
  • QB Matt Barkley
  • RB Tim Hightower
  • FB Kyle Juszczyk
  • TE Logan Paulsen
  • WR Marquise Goodwin
  • WR Aldrick Robinson
  • WR Pierre Garcon
DEFENSE
  • LB Malcolm Smith
  • LB Brock Coyle
  • DT Earl Mitchell
  • DE Dekoda Watson
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • K Robbie Gould

Losses

OFFENSE
  • QB Colin Kaepernick
  • QB Blaine Gabbert
  • RB Shaun Draughn
  • WR Torrey Smith
  • WR Quinton Patton
  • G Andrew Tiller
DEFENSE
  • CB Tramaine Brock
  • S Antoine Bethea
  • S Marcus Cromartie
  • LB Nick Bellore
  • LB Michael Wilhoite
  • DT Glenn Dorsey
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • K Phil Dawson

Analysis

With a new coaching staff in San Fran, there was a ton of turnover on the roster headed into 2017. At the very least, there will be a new QB with a complete flip of the WR core. The 49ers improved at FB with the most improvement coming from subtraction.

Seattle Seahawks

Additions

OFFENSE
  • RB Eddie Lacy
  • G Luke Joeckel
  • G Oday Aboushi
DEFENSE
  • S Bradley McDougald
  • LB Michael Wilhoite
  • LB Arthur Brown
  • LB Terence Gavin
  • DE Dion Jordan
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • None

Losses

OFFENSE
  • TE Luke Willson
  • T Bradley Sowell
DEFENSE
  • S Steven Terrell
  • S Jeron Johnson
  • DT John Jenkins
  • DE Damontre Moore
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • K Steven Hauschka

Analysis

I’m not sure if Eddie Lacy will be an asset or liability, but he’ll add power back to the Seahawks rushing attack. Overall, there wasn’t one impactful player lost or added.
