Fantasy Basketball: Scouting The NBA DFS Playoffs - Saturday, May 6

Fewer games in a slate mean you have to be near perfect to win big. That's why we are here!

Plays of the Day

Value: With Kyle Lowry unable to play Friday and surely significantly less than 100 percent on Sunday, Cory Joseph is a steal at $3,300. He’s a productive starting PG at a majorly discounted rate. You can’t beat that value.

Fade: I’m fading DeMar DeRozan. Sure, he played great last game coming off a nightmarish performance. Nevertheless, he can just easily turn right back into that guy we saw who couldn’t hit a shot on Wednesday night. We have seen him disappear too many times in the playoffs to trust him now.

Game to Target

  • Cleveland Cavaliers @ Toronto Raptors

Point Guards

Two Studs

Stephen Curry (GS) @UTA FD: $10,000/DK: $8,500

Curry is the top guard on this slate. While his numbers are down against the Jazz from where they were against the Blazers, he is still a top-tier option. As long as Utah can keep the game within reason and force the Warriors starters to finish out the game, Curry is a strong option.

Kyrie Irving (CLE) @TOR FD: $9,100/DK: $8,300

Irving has been struggling with his shot a bit, but that can change in a hurry. Coming off a down game look for him to bounce back in a major way Game 4. The Cavs are going to want to close this serious out and get rested up for the Eastern Conference Finals. The Raptors are showing little resistance to this point after three straight blowouts.

Potential Value

Cory Joseph (TOR) vs CLE FD: $3,300/FD: $4,000

With Kyle Lowry unable to play Friday and surely significantly less than 100 percent on Sunday, Cory Joseph is a steal at $3,300. He’s a productive starting PG at a majorly discounted rate. You can’t beat that value.

Long Shot

Shelvin Mack (UTA) vs GS FD: $2,700/DK: $4,200

If George Hill is unable to play again tonight or is limited due to injury, Mack is the man that will see the largest uptick in production. In Game 3 he played 31 minutes and posted 24.6 Fantasy points after playing 21 minutes Game 2 with 21.4 points.

Shooting Guards

Two Studs

Klay Thompson (GS) @UTA FD: $7,100/DK: $ 5,900

Thompson can get as hot as anyone in the league, on this two-game slate that’s good enough to categorize you as a stud. Because this position is so shallow, my Fade of the Day is a stud. Thompson is my No. 1 SG on the slate.

DeMar DeRozan (TOR) vs CLE FD: $7,900/DK: $8,000

I’m not paying for him. However, I really can’t justify putting any other SG over him as a stud on this slate. In fairness, he is coming off a 37 point game in which he tallied 49.9 Fantasy points. The upside is there if nothing else.

Potential Value

Norman Powell (TOR) vs CLE FD: $4,300/DK: $4,600

Since I am down on DeRozan and Lowry is hurt, someone has to score for the Raptors. I like Powell’s game, and he has matched up well with the Cavs with an ability to drive to the basket. In Game 3 he played 36 minutes with 21.6 Fantasy points. This is not his peak and if Lowry is out his upside raises.

Long Shot

Kyle Korver (CLE) @TOR FD: $2,900/DK: $2,900

Korver is coming off his best performance of the playoffs as he knocked down 3’s with ease. It almost looked automatic. Roll with the hot hand in Cleveland. Of course, the hot hand could become JR Smith, Iman Shumpert or Channing Frye. Nonetheless, I’ll go with Korver in this one.

Small Forwards

Two Studs

LeBron James (CLE) @TOR FD: $12,800/DK: $12,200

Have you seen what this man has been doing to teams in the playoffs? Remember when everyone was asking if LeBron James had been surpassed as the best player in the world? It kind of sounds silly now, doesn’t it? No matter what slate he’s playing on in the playoffs, he’s the best player. His price reflects that.

Kevin Durant (GS) @UTA FD: $9,600/DK: $8,700

Durant has been good, not great in the playoffs so far. Still, we know what he is capable of and he’s one of the three best players in the world along with LeBron and Kawhi Leonard. One of these games he’s going to explode, and you will be happy if he’s in your lineup when he does.

Potential Value

Gordon Hayward (UTA) vs GS FD: $8,300/DK: $7,900

It’s a bit odd putting Hayward as a value pick since he’s a borderline stud, but that’s exactly why he’s here. Hayward can easily finish as the top SF on this slate, and you can save money on him. He’s not as good as LeBron or Durant. However, it is much more unlikely that the Jazz win in a blowout and pull their starters in the fourth quarter. I like his value here.

Long Shot

P.J. Tucker (TOR) vs CLE FD: $3,100/DK: $3,600

This is more fallout from the Lowry injury. Tucker has been playing solid minutes and playing well all things considered. In Game 1 vs. Cleveland, he posted 28.7 Fantasy points and last game he totaled 14.5 in 19 minutes. His value is there at $3,100.

Power Forwards

Two Studs

Draymond Green (GS) @UTA FD: $8,800/DK: $8,200

Assuming he’s fully healthy Green has the highest floor on this slate with upside comparable to Kevin Love thanks to his versatility. He’s almost a lock for 40-to-45 Fantasy points, just make sure you watch the injury reports before the game. They could be underplaying or overly cautious with his knee issue.

Kevin Love (CLE) @TOR FD: $7,500/DK: $7,100

Love is the underappreciated and underrated “3” of the Cavs Big 3. He disappears at times from a scoring standpoint, but if his shot is falling his upside is incredible. Even when it’s not, he’s a walking double-double with the ability to pull down 15 boards a game. This keeps his floor higher.

USA TODAY Sports

Potential Value

Derrick Favors (UTA) vs GS FD: $5,500/DK: $4,000

We have seen Favors way up and way down in these playoffs. The biggest factor in his production has been the knee of Rudy Gobert. We saw Gobert’s injured knee act up Game 7 against the Clippers and Favors stepped up in a major way playing 30 minutes and posting 36.7 Fantasy points willing the Jazz past the Clippers. That’s the player he’s supposed to be and can be any given night.

Long Shot

David West (GS) @UTA FD: $3,400/DK: $3,600

As I mentioned earlier, there are some questions surrounding Green’s knee. West could see a large boost if Green doesn’t play his usual minutes. We’ve already seen him put up surprisingly high Fantasy numbers in the playoffs so far.

Centers

Stud

Rudy Gobert (UTA) vs GS FD: $9,400/DK: $7,700

There is only one stud on this two-game slate, and it’s Gobert. He’s far and away the best option at center, although, he will cost you. His knee does make him a bit of a risk. Nevertheless, aside from Game 7 against the Clippers when he played just 13 minutes he’s topped 30 Fantasy points in every game he’s appeared in the playoffs.

Potential Value

Jonas Valanciunas (TOR) vs CLE FD: $4,900/DK: $4,400

Valanciunas has been one of the few bright spots against the Cavs this series. He’s been particularly effective in the first half. He saw his minutes jump from 22 to 30 in Game 3 after a strong Game 2. In those two games, he tallied 29 and 27.6 Fantasy points respectively.

Long Shot

JaVale McGee (GS) vs UTA FD: $3,700/DK: $2,600

Of all the cheap centers on this slate, McGee is the one most likely to give you a big game and top 20 Fantasy points. There is just as good chance he gives you single-digits. Still, if you are rolling the dice on anyone outside of the top-three centers on this slate, it should be McGee.
