Weekend Update

We are now entering Week 7 in Fantasy Baseball, and with it, we have seen many surprises, disappointments, and tons of injuries. Let’s look at things that you may have missed over the weekend.

New York Mets SS Asdrubal Cabrera has a torn ligament in his thumb. While I am sure that Cabrera wants to play through the injury, the Mets may have other ideas considering their top prospect, Amed Rosario plays SS and has looked pretty good in the minors thus far. Expect Rosario to be called up sometime in the coming week or two.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco left the game Sunday with a left hamstring strain. A lot of Fantasy owners are getting frustrated with Polanco’s ineptitude this season (in some cases dropping him), but I preach patience here. Polanco is only 25 and is too good a hitter to give up on right now.

Washington Nationals RP Matt Albers got his second save on Sunday. With Kelley, Treinen, and Glover, all hurt and struggling, Dusty Baker has now gone to his fourth option in the bullpen (Albers) to get saves. To Albers’ credit, he has been phenomenal this season, but it is extremely doubtful that he can keep this going. Look for the Nationals to make a deal in the next month.

Arizona Diamondbacks OF A.J. Pollock left Sunday’s game with groin tightness. Another year and another injury for Pollock. Last year Pollock injured his left groin and this year it is now his right groin that is giving him trouble. The D’Backs have an off day this coming Thursday so I can see the team giving him rest through then and seeing if he can play Friday. However, if you have other options on your bench, I think you should explore them as a DL stint is more than likely.

— More bad news for the D’Backs: OF David Peralta left the game on Sunday with an injured glute muscle. He could miss at least a few games this week. Look for backup Gregor Blanco to get the starts.

I told you on Friday that I had my eye on Minnesota Twins SP Jose Berrios this weekend and he shined. Interestingly enough, other Fantasy owners noticed the same thing I did and spent a fortune on him in FAAB. In Mixed LABR he went for $54 out of $100. I like being aggressive with bidding, but that might be a little too aggressive for a guy who has never put together three good starts in a row in the major leagues.

— Why can’t you trust closers? New York Yankees RP Aroldis Chapman is expected to be out for at least a month with inflammation in his left rotator cuff. Those people who like to take closers early probably took Chapman in the 5th or 6th round at their drafts. Unless they backed him up with Dellin Betances, they could not be happy right about now.

— If you stashed Texas Rangers OF Delino DeShields on your team a couple of weeks ago, that move might pay off as fellow Rangers OF Carlos Gomez left Sunday’s game with an injured hamstring. Gomez is going in for an MRI on Monday, so we will find out relatively soon how much time he will miss.
