A Splendid Odor Coming?
I know you are not going to believe I am saying this, but I am going to do whatever it takes to trade for Texas Rangers 2B Rougned Odor Rougned Odor right now. “But Dr. Roto, Odor sucks! I took him in Round 3, and he’s hitting .218.” Yes, I get that he’s struggling. But I also ask myself whether he has the skills to improve, and I think he does -- big time skills.
At Tout Wars this year, I paid handsomely for Odor hoping that this was going to be his breakout MVP caliber season. And for the first week of the season, I looked like a visionary. However, since that hot first week, Odor has been playing like an unmitigated train wreck at the plate. But let’s look more closely at his numbers.
His walk rate is 4.1% (up from last year’s 3%)
His strikeout rate is 22.9% (last year it was 21.4%)
His contact rate is 76% (it was 78% last year)
True is BABIP is lower (.245 this year vs. .295 last year), but the rest of his numbers are still in line with what he produced last year.
In his career, Odor has always hit around .260 or so and has shown pretty good power (33 HR last year). His stolen base totals are in line with last year’s production too. What this means is that I expect a big jump in his batting average in the coming weeks to match his continued power and speed statistics.
The bottom line is that Odor is the perfect buy low candidate right now. He can’t get any worse than he’s been and if he starts hitting again, he could really help you make a big leap in your league’s standings. To win a Fantasy league, you are going to have to take some chances along the way; Odor represents a smart investment as he is young enough to fix his current problems and go on to have a hugely successful season.
