Quarterback Duel: Ryan Tannehill vs. Marcus Mariota
On this morning’s Scout Fantasy Sports show on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, Adam Ronis and I were discussing the possibility of WR Eric Decker signing with the Titans. Decker’s potential signing would give Marcus Mariota the perfect WR he needs (i.e. one who can run intermediate routes over the middle) to improve the team’s offense. However, we also added that adding Decker might, in fact, hurt Mariota’s value as a Fantasy player. We argued that the Titans want to run the football as much as possible and adding Decker might mean more ball control rather than a freewheeling open offense. Adding to that even more is the fact that Mariota is coming off a serious leg injury, so it makes perfect sense to think that the team would prefer him to stay in the pocket as much as possible.
Adam asked if Mariota was a QB1 in Fantasy Football this year and I said that he probably was in the 10-12th QB range, mainly because his rushing numbers would be down and he only threw for 300+ yards once last season.
Here is what I am thinking now for the Titans offense:
DeMarco Murray — should see 250+ carries once again
Derrick Henry — the team has said it wants to get him more involved
Corey Davis — a rookie WR who will need time to adjust to the league
Rishard Matthews — possibly overachieved last season as team’s No. 1 WR
Delanie Walker — a 32-year-old TE who is slowing down
Right after we finished discussing Mariota, a caller asked what we thought about the Dolphins offense this year. We came up with the following:
Jay Ajayi — most likely second-round pick and 1000 yard rusher
Jarvis Landry — most likely second or third-round pick and 1000 yard WR
DeVante Parker — fifth or sixth round WR who could get 1000 yards and 10 TD
Julius Thomas — late round pick at TE with the potential to score 8 TD or more.
So it begs me to ask this question — As we move forward in the Fantasy Football draft season, is Ryan Tannehill a better value than Marcus Mariota?
As of this minute, I do not have an answer to that question. I need to put in more hours of research and see what happens in training camp before I make that official decision. I think Tannehill will be taken somewhere between rounds 15-20 of Fantasy drafts while Mariota should go somewhere between Rounds 9-12. Does this mean that Tannehill is the better Fantasy QB? Of course not. But it does mean that either Mariota is slightly overrated or that Tannehill might just give back pretty good value in the later rounds.
We will just have to figure this all out on the Road to the Fantasy Football World Championship…
