Tech Test: Acer’s H6517ST Projector

Acer unveils a new projector that has a terrible name but terrific quality.

It’s summertime, and drive-in movies are all but extinct. We’re not letting that stop us though. Thanks to Acer’s H6517ST high-def projector, the side of our house just became our favorite movie theater. If you feel like sitting in the flatbed of a pickup to watch the movies, well, that’s entirely up to you.

Acer’s latest projector pumps out a full 1080p image even if you’re not able to use it in a place with unlimited space. The short throw distance helps for using this bad boy even if you’re in a dorm room or a one bedroom apartment. Pumping out 3000 lumens (read: very bright) and a high, 10,000:1 contrast that makes for darker blacks, picture quality is outstanding on this rig even if there is ambient light making conditions difficult. Getting a quality image with a screen size of over 120” is no problem with the Acer.

Moving on to the nitty gritty, the Acer projector has two HDMI ports, a PC input, and old fashioned RCA inputs to boot. Bulb life clocks in at 4000 hours so you can play 166 straight days of Xbox without having to replace any bulb. The bulbs go up to a staggering 6000 hours if you shift into economy mode, though we wouldn’t bother with that. Who wants degraded quality when you’re pushing out high def and high brightness? No one we want to be friends with, that’s for sure.

Acer’s H6517ST projector retails for $799. When you consider how 120” HDTVs will run you well into five-figures, Acer might be your best bet for big screen movies, tv and gaming this summer and beyond.
