Birdies and Brewery Tours

Ed Schmidt covers quirky stuff and golf travel for Partner Advice.

Looking for the perfect summer vacation? Why not include two of your favorite things: golf and beer? After a day on the fairways, head to a nearby brewery and enjoy a tour. Make sure you visit the sampling room.

Samuel Adams Brewery (Boston). The tour gives visitors a chance to see how the friendly crew makes popular favorites like Boston Lager, Summer Ale and Octoberfest brews. Places to play: George Wright Municipal, Red Tail, Maplegate.

Coors Brewery (Golden, Colorado). After a 30-minute self-guided tour, you cool off in the "fresh beer room" by sipping on samples and sitting on ice-cube benches in a refrigerated room. Places to play: Fossil Trace, Applewood, Fox Hollow at Lakewood.

Deschutes Brewery (Bend, Oregon). Known for craft brew icons like Black Butte Porte and Mirror Pond Pale Ale, this popular brewer immerses you in a world of large kettles and lines of beer bottles. Places to play: Nicklaus Course at Pronghorn, Tetherow, Awbrey Glen.

Other great brewery tours include Anheuser Busch in St. Louis and Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
