What’s Watson Up To?

Next Tuesday, captain Tom Watson will announce his three choices to round out the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Nine players have already qualified based on earnings this summer, but Watson — whose team will pull off a huge upset in September — is sure to make a surprise pick from this list of 20 candidates.

Tom Watson has the European Ryder Cup team right where he wants them. Tiger Woods is out with a bad back, Dustin Johnson is out with personal issues and the Rory McIlroy-led Euros are absolutely loaded (they won three of the four majors this year) and heavily favored. Perfect. Pride cometh before the fall, and the overconfident Euros are set up for the big fall.

Now, all Watson has to do is pick the perfect three players to join the nine who have already qualified for the team (see summaries of each of these players). Whom do you pick, and on what do you base your selections?

“Pride cometh before the fall.”

Here’s a list of 20 players Watson is considering. One of them us sure to be Hunter Mahan, who helped himself big time last weekend by winning The Barclays. Not just because he won, but also because he calmly made the big save when daughter Zoe tipped the tournament trophy, to the horror of wife Kandi. It proved he’s poised in handling upsets.

Who would be your three picks to fill out the U.S. Ryder Cup team?
