ScoutSouth.com: North Jackson vs. Oneonta
North Jackson is the No.1 qualifier from Region 7 and will host the Oneonta Redskins in the first round, the No.4 qualifier from Region 5.
North Jackson won the 1993 4A championship and was the 4A runner-up to UMS-Wright in 2002, losing 7-3 to the Bulldogs on a late touchdown.
The Chiefs have a 23-17 overall record in the playoffs since the school opened in 1988, winning over Boaz 26-7 in the first round in 2006 before being ousted by Dora 14-28 in the second round.
Oneonta is no stranger to the state playoffs either and will represent Region 5 as a formidable foe for the Chiefs. Oneonta won the 3A Championship in 2004, defeating Winfield for the title. They also were 2A State Champions in 1972 and Co-Champions in 1971, along with being 3A Runners-up in 1985, 1987, and 2003.
Oneonta even has a common state playoff championship game opponent with North Jackson. That team that Oneonta lost to in the 1987 Championship game was UMS-Wright, the same team to which North Jackson was runner-up in 2002.
While this may not be a typical Oneonta state contender, the Redskins will bring a lot of tradition into the game Friday night, and the people of North Jackson know just what that means in terms of competition.
Oneonta will be fired-up and ready to play the top-ranked team in the state, and ready to make a statement about their school and team. North Jackson will try to take care of business as usual with a swarming, relentless defense, a hard-driving offense, and heads-up special teams play.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM Friday night at R.D. Hicks Stadium in Stevenson.
