Chiefs, Wildcats Rivalry Kick Off Season

North Jackson (4A) and Scottsboro (5A) will play Friday night in the 21st renewal of their intense rivalry. Tana Patrick, considered by many as the top college prospect in Alabama, will lead the Chiefs against their archrivals as North Jackson looks to continue its dominance of the Wildcats.

In the 20 previous meetings, the Chiefs have been victorious 15 times, only dropping five games to Scottsboro since 1988. Playing in the confines of R.D. Hicks Stadium will not help the Wildcats' cause either, as Scottsboro has never won there. North Jackson has won the previous four meetings in the series.

Patrick sprained a knee a few weeks ago and has seen limited practice since then, but reportedly has been given clearance to play in the opener. Patrick will open at linebacker for the Chiefs and will also work as a hybrid back in the new NJ offense, lining up in the backfield and split out on other plays.

The coaches hope to utilize Patrick's talents more than in the past couple of years in an attempt to keep opposing defenses off-balance. If Patrick is healthy, look for a lot of touches from him in the game.

Scottsboro will come into the game with the Wildcats' patented ball-control running game, relying on its backs to control the tempo and keep the Chiefs' offense off the field. Couple that with a stingy defense and the Cats may be tough to beat. Regardless of the final outcome, this will be real head-banger that's worth watching.
