Stars of Alabama Week 2:
2A Barbour County (2-0; 1-0)
Barbour County improved their record with a 12-6 win over Samson. The senior running back carried the ball 14 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns with runs of 33 and 89 yards. He had 15 tackles on defense, three forced fumbles with one recovery. Richardson is an ASWA All-State forward/center for his basketball team as well.
Barbour County will host a resplendent Elba (2-0; 1-0) who upset fifth-ranked Cottonwood last week.
Quarterback, Running Back, Defensive Back
2A Sulligent (1-1; 1-0)
Massey has gone under center to play some quarterback for the Blue Devils in 2008. He passed the ball six times last week with three receptions for 93 yards. He ran the ball seven times for 146 yards and three touchdowns (51 yards, 1 yard, and 55 yards). Two of his touchdowns were passing plays where he saw the run become available and took advantage. He added two interceptions on defense in the 47-6 region win over Cleveland (1-1; 0-1).
Massey earned ASWA first team All-State honors in 2007 and recognized by the Tuscaloosa News as a West Alabama All-Star. He accumulated 1,449 rushing yards on 187 carries with 28 touchdowns. He also collected 13 interceptions. Head coach Dwight Bowling said previously, "Caleb is the best player I have ever coached." That is an impressive compliment from a coach who has over 200 wins in his career.
Sulligent (1-1; 1-0) will host Cold Springs (0-2; 0-1) this week.
1A Brantley (2-0; 1-0)
Gulley returned a kick 78 yards for a touchdown, returned a punt for a 72-yard score, ran two times for 117 yards and a touchdown. He caught one pass for a 60-yard touchdown. He picked off one pass and had four tackles on defense.
It seems as if Gulley has long been a part of Brantley High School's success, and this is his final season. The senior had a litany of achievements last week against region foe Providence Christian (0-2; 0-1) with the Bulldogs winning 48-8.
Brantley will host Florala (0-1; 0-1) this week.
1A Linden (2-0; 1-0)
The Patriots faced Akron (1-1; 0-1) last week, and Tate's team hung 64 points on the board. Tate scored five touchdowns on only 15 touches in a 204-yard performance. Coach Andro Williams says of Tate, "He's a leader on-and-off the field."
Tate gained honorable mention All-State in 2007 by the ASWA as an athlete. He gained 1,200 yards rushing, and he is three-quarters of the way there in 2008. Tate has 404 yards rushing in only two games.
Linden will travel to face region opponent A.L. Johnson (2-0; 2-0) this week.
Tecumseh Garth, Thomas Spangler
Running Back/Safety; Offensive Guard
5-9, 185; 6-0, 200
1A Hubbard (1-1; 1-1)
Garth rushed for 129 yards on 16 carries with a 72-yard game winning touchdown in the fourth quarter over region opponent Speake in a tough 7-6 win. Garth had nine tackles and three pass breakups in the defensive struggle. He had more than 800 yards rushing in 2007 with 49 tackles on defense.
Spangler, a junior, had 12 tackles with three sacks.
Hubbard hosts Shoals Christian (0-2; 0-2) this week in a region matchup.
2A Washington County (1-1; 1-0)
The senior running back led his team with 17 carries for 178 yards and two touchdown runs of 25 and 37 yards. The Bulldogs defeated Southern Choctaw (36-28) in a region opener. Abston rushed for almost 900 yards in 2007 and is mowing down the competition with his size and 4.8 40-speed.
Washington County will stay home this week to face the top-ranked Leroy Bears (2-0; 1-0).
1A Ragland (1-1; 1-0)
Ragland's All-County running back from 2007 is back at work. The Purple Devils came away with a 20-17 win over Victory Christian (1-1; 0-1) in their first region matchup of the year. Embry accounted for two of those touchdowns with runs of one and 73 yards. He managed 234 total yards on 21 carries.
Ragland will host Jefferson Christian (0-2; 0-1) in their next region outing this week.
2A Flomaton (2-0; 1-0)
The junior back for the Hurricanes ran 20 times against Red Level and gained 319 yards with five touchdown runs of 7, 32, 2, 12 and 50 yards.
Ellis was a first team All-State running back selection by the ASWA for his sophomore season. The speedster reports a 4.4 40-yard dash. He gathered in 1,751 yards rushing in 2007.
Flomaton will host Southern Choctaw (1-1; 0-1) in a region matchup this week.
1A Hubbertville (2-0; 2-0)
Haley-Ricks rushed for 1,230 yards in 2007 for the Lions. He has two games in 2008 totaling 545 yards and nine touchdowns on 33 carries. The senior only played a half in last week's region win (40-20) over Parrish (0-2; 0-2), but he certainly made his presence felt with 10 carries for 232 yards and five touchdown runs of 43, 2, 60, 44 and 36 yards. This is his second appearance in the Stars of Alabama in only two weeks.
Hubbertville will travel for the first time this season to face Marion County (0-2; 0-1).
2A Isabella (2-0; 1-0)
Junior linebacker Lawley is a big part of Isabella's success this season, and he came away with 13 tackles, four for a loss and a fumble recovery in last week's action.
Isabella had one win between 2004-2006. Coach Lanny Jones took over the reins in 2007, and the team won five games. The Mustangs are 2-0 in 2008 after beating eighth-ranked Fultondale (20-10). The defense shut down an offense that boasts four running backs who rushed for nearly 3,500 yards combined in 2007.
Isabella has outscored opponents 94-10 in the first two games. They will journey to face another unbeaten team, Vincent (2-0; 1-0) this week in a region game.
Ladarrison Lewis, G'Juan Land
Defensive End/Linebacker; Quarterback
1A McIntosh (2-0; 2-0)
McIntosh reeled in Coach Larry Boykin last year, and he has doubled the number of players for this team. Ladarrison Lewis came off the bench to rack up 12 tackles, two for a loss of 18 yards in last week's region game against Frisco City (1-1; 1-1).
Quarterback G'Juan Land rushed for 137 yards on seven carries and completed three of seven passes for 58 yards in their 32-6 win.
McIntosh will travel this week to J.F. Shields (0-2; 0-2) for another region matchup.
Kent Hallman, Adam McCarley
Running Back; Quarterback/Safety
5-8, 170; 5-11, 160
Phillips Bear Creek (2-0; 1-0)
Phillips traveled to Marion County (0-2; 0-1) last week to play an out of region game with the Bears winning 56-7. Hallman ran the ball eight times for 68 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 121 yards and another two touchdowns. He returned a kickoff for an 87-yard touchdown. Hallman accounted for 34 points total with his two-point conversions. He made four tackles on defense.
McCarley ran the ball seven times for 46 yards and completed seven of 12 passing attempts gaining 206 yards and three touchdowns. He had two tackles and one pass breakup on defense.
Phillips will face a tougher assignment this week when they meet region opponent Speake (1-1; 1-1) who is a couple of points away from being undefeated after their loss to Hubbard last week.
Nathan Funk, Justin Brock
5-10, 215; 5-9, 185
South Lamar (1-1; 1-0)
Funk ran the ball 22 times for 201 yards and two rushing touchdowns of 36 and 38 yards. The senior had 12 tackles from his linebacker position. He also punted for his club and averaged 40 yards.
Brock had 19 turns running the ball gaining 135 yards with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter from 50 and eight yards out. The senior also plays linebacker and had 10 tackles and two sacks on defense.
South Lamar won the region contest over 10th-ranked Hackleburg 27-15. The Stallions will host this week region opponent Brilliant (0-2; 0-2).
2A Westminster Christian (1-1; 0-1)
The senior quarterback suffered through the first 14 minutes of the game with three turnovers and a touchdown returned against them on special teams. Down 20-0, Park set a new state record completing 39-of-60 passes for 470 yards and three touchdowns. Park sent 12 receptions to his 6-5, 190-pound tight end Andy McWilliams for 210 yards.
Unfortunately, his three-quarter effort resulted in a 31-26 deficit, plus the 20 from the first 14 minutes, and the Wildcats lost their region opener to a tough 11th-ranked Red Bay team 51-26.
The old record of 37 completions was set in 1987 by Robert Nomberg who attempted 68 passes and gained 379 yards and three touchdowns in his game.
Park and his 'Cats will tee it up again this week against Cherokee (1-1; 1-0) on the road in a region game.
Matt Sandlin, quarterback, 2A American Christian Academy, completed 13-of-21 pass attempts for 158 yards and had three rushes for 12 yards.
Clint Moseley, quarterback, 2A Leroy, completed 14-of-21 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns, 121 yards rushing two touchdowns, kicked two point after kicks and had a 64-yard punt.
Robert McCoy, defensive line, 3A Leeds, 11 tackles, four for a loss, two sacks.
Dematrae Griffin, defensive line, 1A Speake, 15 tackles with four assists.
Justin Heard, running back, 2A Woodland, rushed for 193 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns, catch for an 11-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Levi George, running back, 3A Danville, 14 carries for 123 yards and three touchdowns.
Spencer Arthur, quarterback, 1A Mt. Hope, ran the ball 10 times for 79 yards and three touchdowns, completed five of eight passing attempts in the first region win (26-24) for Mt. Hope in 10 years.
Brandon Thomas, Athlete, 2A Horseshoe Bend, rushed for 59 yards on 10 carries, had three receptions for 85 yards, 130 return yards, seven tackles with one interception, recorded 274 all-purpose yards.
Courtney Moss, running back, Alabama Christian, 22 carries, 100 yards, three receptions for 42 yards and four tackles on defense.
Jamar Hopson,running back, 1A Billingsley, rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns.
Raphael Brooks, receiver, 1A Billingsley, 88 yards receiving with a touchdown.
Josh Brooks, Athlete, Fruitdale, One pass for 44 yards, four carries for 104 yards including a 62 yard touchdown, ran back a kickoff for an 88-yard touchdown, one interception and 13 tackles on defense
