Scouting: 2A New Brockton HS

New Brockton is 2-2 for the season in Class 2A Region 2. They opened the season with two wins, but the last two games as losses came at the hands of undefeated Houston Academy and last week against Cottonwood. You learn a lot about your team in a win, but just as much in a loss.

"When we come to play we can compete with anyone on the schedule," Jim Bob Striplin said. "Our losses are a result of breakdown in technique and assignment, both of which we are in the process of improving on."

High school coaches are some of the best in evaluating talent. They must prepare and study a lot of film on an opponent. Coach Striplin shared a few who his team has faced in the early part of the season as the best in their area.

"Dwayne Whiggam (RB, G.W. Long), Seth McGowen (RB, Houston Academy), Keri Pender (WR, Cottonwood)."

Striplin gave a little insight as to the strengths of the 2008 New Brockton team.

"Spreading the ball around on offense, ability to control the clock when we need to with our power attack," he explained.

Injuries reported: Starting guard Kyle Osborne (concussion); starting guard Jeremy Weeks (knee).

New Brockton will host 1A Ariton (2-2) this week who features an elite prospect in 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive end Craig Sanders. It's sometimes hard to motivate a team when you step down a classification to play a non-region opponent.

"Not hard [to motivate], every game is a must win for us," he explained. "Ariton is tough as nails."

Key leaders to keep a watchful eye for New Brocton:
Hunter Cauley, QB, Jr., 5-10, 180
Tevin McNair, RB, Jr., 5-10, 200
Seth Culverhouse, WR, Jr., 6-0, 175
Hayden Smith, OL, Sr., 6-3, 260
David Davidson, LB, Sr., 5-10, 200

Coach Striplin was at Wadley High School in Randolph County for eight years before arriving at New Brockton. He was also the varsity and junior varsity basketball coach as well as varsity baseball coach for six years winning eight championships during his tenure.

Striplin attended Auburn University and played football from 1997-1999 for Terry Bowden and Tommy Tubberville.
