North AL Game Recaps, Part I

The number one team in Class 5A loses to Erwin. Hartselle dominates Athens. Cordova bounces back after their first loss in nearly two years. Winston County makes a statement, and Hazlewood is setting the grass on fire with their rushing attack. That is just a few of the games you can read about in this week's "game recaps."

New Market: The Decatur Red Raiders have gotten on a mini roll with three consecutive wins. They are now 3-2 in Class 6A, Region 8, and 4-2 overall this season.

Ben Neill led the Red Raiders air attack with 223 yards passing and one touchdown, while completing 17-of-23 attempts.

Memphis commitment, Brooks Johnson, was on the receiving end of seven of Neill's passes for 111 yards.

The Buckhorn Bucks could not get their offense untracked, as Decatur's defense put the clamps on Bucks only allowing 134 yards of total offense with no points given up. The Red Raiders earned their first shut-out of the season by a final score of 2-0.

Hazlewood's Keenon Porter rushed for 214 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries as the Golden Bears demolished Shoals Christian 56-6. Porter went over the 200-yard mark for the third time this season. He also rushed for 305 yards when the Bears defeated Phillips two weeks ago.

The 5-6, 145-pound running back has rushed for 731 yards, and 11 touchdowns in the last three games.

Tanner: Tanner High sophomore running back Tre Cosby is having some outstanding games this season, but he topped all previous performances with 272 yards on 20 carries with three touchdowns in Tanner's 42-21 region win over Westminster on Friday.

Cosby has rushed for 883 yards and 13 touchdowns through six games in the 2008 season. The Tanner Rattlers are 6-0 on the season and sitting in first place in Class 2A, Region 8.

Stevenson: Tana Patrick finished the game with six tackles, a 39-yard touchdown reception, and 20 yards rushing on two carries, as the North Jackson Chiefs defeated Douglas 47-0.

A.J. Matthews rushed for 111 yards, and two touchdowns on three carries, with the longest run of the evening a 76-yard touchdown scamper. North Jackson moves to 5-1 this season, with a 4-0 record in Class 4A, Region 7.

Jasper: The Walker Vikings' Fred Jones led the Vikings first half attack against Pleasant Grove. The 5-6, 150-pound mighty-mite caught two passes for 93 yards and a touchdown, intercepted a pass, and rushed for a touchdown all before half-time, as Walker blasted Pleasant Grove 50-10.

Quarterback Jared Henderson chipped in three touchdowns, and 143 yards as he went five-of-eight passing in the first half.

The Vikings' defense also stood tall, as they forced five turn-overs in the contest. Four interceptions and one fumble recovery set the tone on the defensive side of the ball.

Aliceville: The Cordova Blue Devils bounced back with a vengeance Friday night as they defeated Aliceville 42-24. The Blue Devils lost to Class 5A Hartselle last week, in a game that saw the Blue Devils score the most points the third ranked Tigers had given up this season.

The Blue Devils' defense forced five turn-overs on the evening. Tim Simon scooped up a fumble and returned it 53-yards for a touchdown. He also led the defense with seven tackles. Jake Howton had two interceptions as well.

Simon turned in another outstanding performance from his running back position, as he rushed 11 times for 140-yards, and three touchdowns.

Ryan Smith completed six of his nine passing attempts for 135-yards, and one touchdown. Jake Howton was the recipient of five of Smith's passes, for 118-yards, and one touchdown.

Double Springs: The Winston County Yellow Jackets hosted the Sulligent Blue Devils in a key Class 2A, Region 7 contest Friday night at Malcolm Blake Stadium in Double Springs. The Yellow Jackets defeated Sulligent 28-13 in a hard fought, physical football game.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the game at the line-of-scrimmage, as the Winston County defense sacked Sulligent's Caleb Massey three times, and intercepted two passes. Massey was forced to go to the air after the Yellow Jackets gained a 14-0 lead at half-time.

Josh Johnson continued to lead the Yellow Jacket rushing attack with 194-yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. The 5-11, 207-pound running back carried the ball 32 times during the game.

The Jackets remain perfect on the season, and are holding on to the top spot in Class 2A, Region 7.
