Etowah LB Grabs First Offer

David Hawkins is a 5-10, 215-pound strong linebacker, and running back for the Etowah Blue Devils. Hawkins recorded 98 tackles during his junior season, with 10 tackles for a loss. Coach Hill of Etowah went on record about David's ability to ‘play hard and reckless, and hit big.' Hawkins reports his first offer of the season.

Hawkins is a very positive young man, who believes in himself, and his team. It is obvious by talking to him he is a team player. He is always looking for a way to make "the team" better. That's a great approach in today's game when so many young men get caught up in the recruiting hype.

Hawkins discussed his first offer, and is hoping for more in the near future.

"I got an offer from New Mexico State," an elated David Hawkins said from his home in Attalla, (Ala.).

"They are the first team to offer me a scholarship this season, and at this point I like them a lot. I appreciate their effort in recruiting me, and that means a lot to me."

"Coach Terry Grant called me and told me the news last Thursday night. They were waiting for me to visit them before they extended an offer, but we don't have a bye week in our schedule, which makes it hard to get out there during the weekend. I will visit sometime right after football season ends."

New Mexico State isn't the only school interested in Hawkins' services.

"I'm still hearing from Alabama and Auburn a fairly good bit. I also hear from Oregon, UT-Chattanooga and Murray State."

"I would say UTC is recruiting me harder than anyone else. I talk to Coach Corbin weekly. I think they are considering me very strongly."

"I also talk to Oregon pretty often. Alabama still calls me once in a while, and I still hear form Auburn every once in a while."

Etowah defeated Scottsboro Friday night by a final score of 20-0. Hawkins turned in another big performance, and he tells about the evening.

"I had 12 tackles, two sacks, two touchdowns, and 80 yards rushing," Hawkins noted. If we win out we will finish second in our region. If we beat Boaz I think we're in the playoffs, but we want to win every game."

"I think Friday could be a turning point for our season. We all went out and played hard, but we had fun playing. We have been putting so much pressure on ourselves that we weren't having fun. You don't have fun if you aren't making plays."

"We have Arab this week, and they always play us a tough game. They can come in winless, and they still play us tough. I don't know what it is, if they match-up with us, or what, but they will come to play. We do not want to underestimate them. Arab will play us the entire way."
