ScoutSouth.com Star of Alabama Player of the Week is the amazing Anthony Gulley, the master of everything from Brantley High School.
Brantley, led by the senior gridiron and baseball star, faced undefeated McKenzie last week in a pivotal Region 2 game. Gulley carried the ball eight times for 216 yards with five touchdown runs of 62, 42, 31, 18 and 48 yards. That was a half-game for Mr. Gulley. He didn't play offensively in the second half.
Gulley was named honorable mention All-State in 2007 and projects as a first team selection for 2008. He rushed for over 1,600 yards last season with 167 carries and 18 touchdowns. He scored four touchdown runs on special teams and made 37 tackles on defense with five interceptions.
We must keep in mind when looking at Gulley's stats for the 2008 season where he has played short games in many of the Bulldogs' outings this season.
37 carries for 805 yards and 13 touchdowns
21.8 yards per carry
Scored on 35-percent of his rushing touches
12 receptions for 384 yards and seven touchdowns
32 yards per catch
Scored a touchdown on 58-percent of his catches
Two kick returns for 146 yards and two touchdowns
73 yards per return
Scored a touchdown 100-percent of his returns
Four punt returns for 163 yards and two touchdowns
40.8 yards per return
Scored a touchdown 50-percent of his returns
The two-sport star has 35 tackles, seven sacks, two interceptions and one fumble recovery for his defensive efforts.
Coach David Lowery is receiving a lot of calls for film, and there's a reason this playmaker is garnering so much attention. Baseball is a major factor as well.
The sparse use of Gulley reminds of another running back from the south, Joe McKnight, of John Curtis High School in Louisiana. Imagine how many yards they would have earned if the end zone didn't get in their way.
