Coach Royal Carpenter talks Hazlewood

Coach Carpenter came in for Coach Heath Grimes at the beginning of the 2008 season, and the Bobcats haven't missed a beat. Speake is 9-2 headed into this week's rematch with the Golden Bears of Hazlewood. The Bears defeated the Bobcats 28-22 earlier this season after Speake jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

ScoutSouth.com caught up with Speake's Coach Royal Carpenter earlier this week, and he was kind enough to share his thoughts on this week's game.

"Well, we just know Hazlewood is a tough team. They always play good football over there, and they thrive off your mistakes and turn overs," Carpenter said.

"We jumped out to a 14-0 lead on them back during the season, and then we committed a fumble where they scooped and scored. They beat us on our mistakes, and you have to give them the credit for that."

Coach Carpenter discussed the health of his team.

"I guess we are about as healthy as we can be at this point of the season," he said. "You have to play with some bumps and bruises."

"We have one young man that will try to play with a torn MCL. He's a senior, and he wants to play. I wouldn't let him play, but the doctor says he can't do anymore harm to his knee than he has already."

"Other than that we are in pretty good shape with injuries."

The Bobcats have been to the Class 1A state playoffs each of the last three years, but the Bobcats have yet to advance past the second round.

"We just want to try to put it all together one time and get to the third round. That's something that has never happened at Speake. We would like to make that happen for our kids, and the community," Carpenter concluded.

Hazlewood will host Speake Friday evening at 7:00 PM.
