Speake continues to roll

The Speake Bobcats continue to explore new and undiscovered territory as far as their football program is concerned. The Bobcats have been flirting with big time success over the past few seasons, but this is the year they finally made it past the second round of the state playoffs.

Coach Royal Carpenter has done something no other coach in the history of Speake High School has ever done. He has taken the Bobcats to the semifinals of Alabama's Class 1A state playoffs. This comes on the heels of another first, the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

The Speake Bobcats will have their hands full this week as they will meet a tough Gaston team in the semifinals. Coach Carpenter is well aware of the task at hand.

"This time of the year you do not have any bad teams left," he said.

"Every team left playing at this point of the season is a good one, and this bunch looks very good on film. They have a good quarterback, a good offensive line, they play good defense and they have a running back that looks like the real-deal."

"The young man looks very good on film. He runs hard, and he has good speed. He is a big back, and he does everything well from his running back position. He also plays on defense, and he looks impressive there as well. He is a very good athlete," Coach Carpenter said of Gaston's Demont Buice.

"I really love it for our kids. They have come in here and worked very hard, they have done everything we have asked of them, and they're still doing it."

"We are not going to do anything any differently than we have all season. The four teams left in the 1A division all run the wing-T offense and play good defense. We aren't doing anything differently from anyone else," Coach Carpenter concluded.

While Gaston has plenty of talent of their own the Bobcats aren't bad either. You will see two good running backs in this game, as Speake's Dez Polk is having an outstanding season.

Others to watch for the Bobcats:

Demetrae Griffin and K.C. Orr are defensive linemen who are stand-out players.
