The Sulligent Blue Devils hung with the Leroy Bears until early in the fourth quarter. Sulligent lost their two most explosive players in Steven Stewart and Caleb Massey in two series. Massey would return on offense, but he was without any mobility.
Leroy took the opening kickoff and marched down the field to take and early 6-0 lead. The two-point conversion was good, and Leroy led the game 8-0.
The Blue Devils drove the length of the field and tied the score after Caleb Massey
completed two passes that moved the Blue Devils inside the Leroy 10-yard line. Massey took it inside the one-yard line, and the Blue Devils scored on the following play. Massey raced around right end to add the two-point conversion and the game was tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Battle at the line of scrimmage
After the two teams swapped punts the Bears were able to get another drive going behind the arm of their All-State quarterback, Clint Moseley
, and some tough running by Michael Bracy
The Bears scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the second quarter, but the two-point attempt failed and the Bears held a 14-8 lead.
Leroy held Sulligent to a punt and looked headed into the end zone for another score before Caleb Massey intercepted a Mosley pass at the goal-line and took it 84 yards down to the Leroy 16-yard line. However, Massey has the first-down pass sail high and Leroy intercepted which led to back-to-back interceptions from the two All-State quarterbacks.
The defenses took over from that point and played tough throughout the remainder of the first half, and the entire third quarter. Neither team could mount a drive in the third quarter.
All that would change when Sulligent's Steven Stewart
was carted off the field after he caught a Massey pass and landed on his neck, and the back of his head. The Blue Devils had driven the ball inside the Leroy 30 and looked to have something going before the injury.
Massey was injured a few plays later and had to leave the game for an extended period of time. He would return to play quarterback later in the fourth quarter, but the damage had been done.
Leroy took advantage of the Blue Devils misfortune and added 27 points in the fourth quarter. The outburst made for an ugly final score in a game that could have went either way for more than three quarters.
