Trey Spiller makes decision

Trey Spiller is a 6-6, 285-pound offensive tackle who received a lot of early attention from schools around the SEC, as well as other areas of the country. Spiller has made his choice much to the surprise of several area recruiters.

"UAB has been my battle," Trey Spiller said from his home in Hokes Bluff, Ala. "I have stated from the beginning they were my favorite school, but things haven't gone well for me with them (UAB.)"

"I was supposedly the fifth lineman on their board, and they told me they were going to get me in for an official visit, but they never did call back. I decided to move on," Spiller explained.

Once word got out the big prospect didn't receive the scholarship he had hoped, other offers started to come in.

"I picked up an offer from Gardner-Webb in North Carolina. They came by my school about a month ago and extended me an offer the following week. I took an official visit there last week, and I fell in love with the place. I went ahead and committed while I was there." Spiller noted.

"The coaches told me they couldn't believe I was still out there. They thought I was going D-1, until they came by my school. I told them the only way I would not be at Gardner-Webb next year would be if I picked up a D-1 offer between now and signing day. They understood that."

"I got to see everything while I was there. I talked to the coaches, met a lot of the players. It was like one big family. I made some friends on the trip, and they have been texting and calling me ever since I came home," Spiller exclaimed.

Spiller received a call from another school on the way home from his official visit to Gardner-Webb..

"I got the call on the way home, and Samford offered me. The coaches came by my home and talked to me about coming to Samford, but I was honest with them. I told them I was committed to Gardner-Webb, and it would take something that blew me away to even consider changing my mind."

"Coach Pat Sullivan talked to me, and he said if I committed I would be their top recruit this season. He wants me to take an official visit to Samford, and I think I'm going to since it is right here at home."

"I also told coach Sullivan I was committed, and that I am a pretty loyal guy. It will take something very special to get me away from Gardner," Trey Spiller concluded.
