Players to look for in the first round of this years' 6A Playoffs:
Theodore, AL - (Daphne vs. Theodore) Daphne's David Fowler (6-3, 275), a senior offensive guard, has committed to Southern Miss. Theodore has senior linebacker C.J. Mosley who holds scholarship offers from Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Clemson. The team's junior quarterback Chris Nelson (6-2, 210) is receiving a lot of attention, and one of the best recruits in the state for the 2011 class.
Fairhope, AL - (Murphy vs. Fairhope) Standout senior running back Jamal Woodyard went down with an ankle injury, but his team carried on to a 10-0 record. The Pirates' senior quarterback, Daryl Norris (6-1, 210), is scheduled to sign with Mississippi State's baseball team. Defender Chase Garnham (6-2, 195) holds offers to Southern Miss and UAB. Meanwhile the highly sought after Murphy standout is Solomon Patton (5-9, 170). The senior wide receiver committed to the Florida Gators earlier this year.
Mobile, AL - (Blount vs. McGill-Toolen) The home team of McGill-Toolen is lead by junior quarterback Preston Messer (6-1, 190), and will face Blount's Jarrick Williams (6-2, 205), who is committed to the University of Alabama.
Mobile, AL (Foley vs. Davidson) Chris Hughes (6-0, 210) of Davidson will host rival Foley in the first round of the playoffs. Hughes is again in the spotlight after a pre-season injury had placed him on the sidelines. The senior has a host of offers from SEC teams with Mississippi State and Arkansas leading the way.
Phenix City, AL - (Stanhope Elmore vs. Central Phenix City) Darren Daniel (6-4, 190) is the senior quarterback for the 9-1 Red Devils. He has scholarship offers from Southern Miss and Vanderbilt. He is also hearing from other big name schools such as Auburn and Clemson. Stanhope Elmore features defensive back and Alabama commitment Demarcus Milliner (6-1, 185) and quarterback Arsenio Favor (6-2, 210) who is committed to Southern Miss.
Prattville, AL - (Dothan vs. Prattville) The defending 6A champion Lions will host Dothan in the first round of the playoffs. Prattville boasts several top prospects in defensive back Nick Perry (6-2, 190) who has pledged to Alabama, Sam Gibson (6-1 210) to LSU, Quashaun Lee (6-0, 220) and Cedric Smith (5-11, 180) both to Arkansas State, and Corey Shelton (5-7, 160) to Memphis. Look for Dothan linebacker McKinley Greer (5-11, 215) to play another good game for the Tigers.
Auburn, AL - (Lee-Montgomery vs. Auburn) The undefeated Tigers are led by South Alabama quarterback commitment Calvin Jenkins (6-1, 180). Wide receiver Pee Wee Cobb (6-0, 180) has several offers and picked off his seventh pass last week against 5A Booker T. Washington. Offensive lineman John Hix (6-2, 270) is considering several schools including Appalachian State and UAB. The biggest of the stars, literally, is the 6-7 270-pound defensive lineman LaMichael Fanning. The junior can pretty much call his shots as to where he wants to play on Saturdays. They all want him.
Tuscaloosa, AL - (Spain Park vs. Tuscaloosa County) Spain Park's Jeremiah Jackson (6-2, 260) has already committed to Arkansas while senior linebacker Wilson Robinson (6-3, 190) has been offered by Samford University. County High's senior quarterback Matt Sandlin (6-4, 210) has been offered by a school that knows a thing or two about quarterbacks, Marshall University.
Vestavia Hills, AL - (Minor vs. Vestavia Hills) Minor always has a lot of talent, and third year starter and senior quarterback Ken Marbury (5-10, 170) has led the Tigers into the first round of the playoffs to face Vestavia. The Rebels have two offensive tackles who anchor the line including senior Drew Dearman (6-4, 275) and the behemoth junior Justin Ivory (6-5, 345).
Hoover, AL - (Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa vs. Hoover) Hillcrest Tuscaloosa brings a five game winning streak and their exciting senior wide receiver Lance Wilson (5-10, 165). They will need all of his ability and then some to beat the powerhouse Hoover team with prospects like senior wide receivers Maudrecus Humphrey (6-2, 185) and Josh Magee (6-0, 170). Humphrey has offers from Arkansas, Kentucky and Ole Miss among others. Linebackers Antonio Gaylord (6-0, 210) and John Propst (6-2, 215) have already made their pledges. Gaylord is committed to Central Michigan while Propst plans to become a Mountaineer for West Virginia.
Watch for Bucs' junior quarterback Ryan Carter (6-2, 180) who is asked to do a lot in this offense. He has shown poise beyond his years, and he is one to watch for next year's recruiting class.
Bessemer, AL - (Pelham vs. Jess Lanier) Senior linebacker LaDarius Owens (6-3, 230) looks like a great grab for Auburn. His team has shown the results of his play with a 9-1 season. They will host Pelham who has another linebacker commitment for the Tigers in Jake Holland (6-1, 230). They also have FSU commitment Nigel Terrell (6-2, 205).
Oxford, AL - (Decatur vs. Oxford) While Decatur doesn't have a Rolando McClain or Jerraud Powers on the roster they have the very gutsy Ben Neill (5-10, 170). The three-year starter for the Raiders plays quarterback, defensive back and punter.
Oxford has senior defensive tackle Jared Morse (6-3, 260) and senior defensive end Dimitri Orr (6-6, 245). Morse committed to Vanderbilt, but he is still considering schools like Kentucky, Auburn and Arkansas who have all offered. Orr was an Arkansas commitment before backing off that decision in favor of Auburn or FSU.
Madison, AL - (Clay-Chalkville vs. Bob Jones) Bob Jones has some good solid talent and great coaching just like Hewitt-Trussville. Huskies' senior running back Noah Wilson (5-9, 175) is once again healthy, but may find rough sledding against the Patriots' tough defensive team.
Florence, AL - (Clay-Chalkville vs. Florence) Clay-Chlakville visits the Falcons, and they may not play their star senior running back, D.J. Vinson (5-11, 190), who went down in a game against Buckhorn last week. Senior quarterback Bryce Curtis (6-1, 205) is one to watch for the Falcons.
Gadsden, AL - (Huntsville vs. Gadsden City) Huntsville will take the trip into Gadsden City which has become talent-rich after the consolidation of three schools. Seniors Dale Trimble (5-10, 170) a defensive back, has offers to Auburn, Kentucky and Ole Miss. Junior wide receiver Daryl Collins has offers to both in-state SEC schools, LSU and Miami.
There is no reason to stay home Friday night with this much high school football to watch and future college players as well. The 'Stars of Alabama' will come out in full force this week.
